Attero Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 G'Day Guys! I bought my RV about six months ago and about one month ago I got rammed to the left hand side. I have been looking around for another RV but just can't find anyone as good as the one I have. The k's are around 170K and the car has been treated as my little baby. The mechanics quote to fix it ended at 4000 Aud, but the question is whether i should fix it or find another undamaged RV. Or third option, should I have a go of fixing it my self? Adding pics of the damage. Please I need some advice, this is my first RV and I don't have much experience with em. Quote
ke70dave Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 why isnt the person who hit you paying to fix it? Quote
Attero Posted May 9, 2012 Author Report Posted May 9, 2012 The Insurance company has issued a compensation of 3500 Aud. And they have deemed it a writeoff. I am not that familiar with what a writeoff means, if i am allowed to repair it or not. However I still have to put out an expence to cover the gap between what I have and what i need to repair the RV. This whole mess was not my fault, the other party was at fault. I did call the guy and offered him the quote, but he is actively truing to avoid my calls... Quote
ke70dave Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 ahhh so you got 3500k out of it. i assume what has happened is what is called an 'economical write off'. which means that the insurance company has determined that the cost of the repairs (~$4000) is more than the market value of the car (~$3500) So instead of paying to repair it, they just give you what they determine that the car is worth, in this case $3500. Agreed it is a pain to you and it wasnt even your fault, insurance rarely works in your favour. by all means try and fix it yourself, but thats pretty serious damage. I think also, once you get it fixed you need to have it inspected by somone to check that it has been repaired properly, and they take you off the "written off car list". I pesonally woudlnt spend $4000 on fixing a car that is worth $3500. Quote
oldie Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 The last experience that I had, very similiar to this,my car was hit,not my fault, the person who hit me,their insurance company rated mine an economic write off. They paid me the value of the car BUT I was allowed to keep the car, keep the rego and it was not listed on the written off vehicles register(I'm still driving it today, still smashed,I kept the money, the cars a bomb anyway) so if the case is the same for you and you have a quote of $4000 and they give you $3500,then it will be $500 out of your pocket if you want it repaired. You really need to ask the assessor a few questions but I would probably buy myself a new one. Quote
Kid-Ae Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 If you can keep that RV, keep it. Use it as a parts car. Buy another Corolla with the $3500 and use the smashed one to learn with. That damage looks like it is in quite a tough spot to correct. Easiest option is to just buy something else. Quote
