How can I tell if my 5 speed is any good

All I can think of is to make sure you can select all the gears, and that when you turn the input shaft the output shaft also spins in every gear.

Make sure it has oil and pray.

 

Open it up and make sure no teeth fall out.

^^^ what he said, pull the plate off the bottom and check no teeth are missing on the gears, check wear on syncro's ect. you would have to pull off the extension housing to check 5th and reverse though.
