Hey guys

Been lurking this forum as a visitor for a while now collecting various info and answers, and figured id make an account and share my KE70 build and some of the progress ive made so far. Along the way i will be sharing some of the methods i use while also hopefully learning much in return! I'm 24 now and Ive had a lot of cars from V8s and 6s to 4x4s but never a corolla/drifter. This is my first propper race intended build/project and what i hope to be an awesome learning experience, but is equally likely to be a nightmare for my bank account and what my mate describes as a world of hurt... Regardless, let the fun begin!!

I bought the car around christmas time off a bloke who turned out to be a mate of a mate. It had most of the current gear in it already. It runs a 4k with twin delorto 40s, and a 5 speed. Also coilover sleeves, Corona brakes, extended Lca's, Roll centre adjusters,15x9-0 rims, welded diff, bride seat and some other bits and pieces.

This is how it looked when i picked it up but a bit has changed since then. post-24088-0-61471200-1460509817_thumb.jpg

In short my goals for the car are to rebuild and turbo the 4agze motor i have, install that alongside a t50 or w series box and make it slide. Most suspension and the neccessary steering parts will be replaced, fix the bad rust, strip out the back seats, half cage and use it on the track as well as the street... well, until it gets defected, at which time it will likely retire to a life of smoking tyres on the race track.

Without a doubt ill have many questions for you guys down the track but i think ive come to the right place to share and document my build. Cheers for reading, much more progress to come!!

A couple of months later, once the car was on the road again, i found a dude in Wangaratta selling a rolling shell for a very reasonable price. It was nana spec creme, like mine, with a dx flat front and came with a bunch of mystery goodies. I couldnt resist a cheap dx front conversion so towed it back to melbourne the next weekend.

Once home i started poking around inside, looked up and saw this bloke was standing on the rear pillar about 100mm from my face. Fair to say i shit myself.

I set him free out the front and continued rummaging. There was a k50 gearbox, almost complete interior, fully hectic canon exhaust tip, and a bunch of other useless shit. Then i found a battery relocation kit, score! Upon further inspection i realised the car was rolling on an RN22 Hilux diff, Double score! Ill be removing the diff at some stage for an inspection, if it all looks ok ill be tranplanting it into my car down the road.

Being suprisingly straight and rust free for a paddock car, ill be cutting up the rest of the good panels, after the flat front conversion, and using them for the rust repair sections where neccessary. Then off to the scrap yard it goes. Not bad for a $600 investment.

First up i removed all the front panels off the rolling shell, then unpicked the welds on the radiator support and removed it. I then did the same to my car and welded the flat front rad support in place. I used tech screws first so i could measure and make sure it was in the right place then welded it in position and gave it a coat of paint.

The bonnet had a few decent sized dents in it so once id fixed them up, bolted it on and had all the gaps looking pretty good i trial fitted the headlights retainers, headlight and grill. Then when it came to the beaver panel i realised i needed to recess the section under the headlight surround, as it was to suit a square headlight flat front, not dx.

I cut the profile of the recess i needed then welded it back together, light coat of filler then primed.

I then repainted the headlight surround, gave the patchy bonnet a coat of grey dulux and clear from bunnings (don't have a spray gun yet) and put it all back together. Getting the gaps all lining up well required a lot of patience but the end result was pretty good. Final paint can wait for now.

The front end has been put on hold til my wheels arrive from Japan. 2x Work equip 01 for the front. Then i can go ahead flare my guards to suit the new wheels. I also need to get chrome bumpers (if anyone has any for sale) and new indicators lenses and have the wiring loom altered as some of the clips are different from slanty to flat.

A couple of weeks ago i moved to the rear of the car and started cutting out rust. As always there was a lot more than i initially thought. I started on the worse side of the two. I wont go into so much detail with every repair i do but this was my method for those of you who are interested and want to have a go yourselves! Id recommend trying it, if you have the patience youll probably suprise yourself! Anyway..

This was the first section i tackled.

post-24088-0-27443300-1460685291_thumb.jpg

I cut the entire bottom half of the rear quarter, internal/underbody panel and external panel, off of the shell so i had plenty to work with. Marked out my piece that i needed, checked several times and the started cutting... still managed to cut off too much but i made it work in the end.

Rust free panel from the shell welded in place.

Grinded the welds back, welded back over any pinholes i missed then grinded back smooth again.

Gave it a healthy coat of filler, most of this will be sanded off but better to have too much than too little. Sanded it all back then went over any pinholes with the filler again, then sanded again with 400 grit.

Then a few coats of epoxy and ready for paint!

Hope everyone had a good weekend! So I moved onto the next section of rust about a week ago, behind the right hand rear guard. Always a bad bad spot for rust and this time is no exception. Rusted right thought the whole section, inside and outside panels.

post-24088-0-77705400-1460882003_thumb.jpg

This section was also rusted to shit on the parts car. While being in primer and looking half decent from the outside the inside was severely corroded. I decided id be best off shaping a new section from a clean panel. I shaped it using what i had, a hammer and a length of 6mm square hollow section. Worked well!
