Hey.

post-5027-1200667106_thumb.jpg

I bought this little Corolla two years ago when I first got my P's. It's done 352k+ k's but it's still going. I'm currently using it for pizza deliveries and it's treated me well, but I was thinking of changing a few things or even the car... It's a 4 speed as well so it's tends to be quite noisy when down shifting and around 80km/h. I was thinking of either getting it panelbeated and getting rid of the rust and painting it. I also wanted to put one of those 4A-GE engines in it as I've read around these forums a lot that they're pretty good. I thought for a while and realised that it might be cheaper to just sell it and look for the same model that's in better condition. So I've got a few questions for you guys:

- Are 4A-GEs hard to find?

- What is the typical cost of getting a 4A-GE put in?

- What are they like on fuel? City driving? Country?

I don't know much about cars so any suggestions that get a bit technical might have to be dumbed down. :D

Cheers.

Ok. I went and looked at a 1982 KE70 today and it's in PERFECT condition with one or two spots of rust and a bit of a scratch. 2nd owner, original paint, engine, everything. No cracks in the dashboard windows still working fine engine is clean sounds brand new. I'm going to buy that one and sell the red one above. But I still have a few questions about 4A-GEs. I've read the FAQ about them and I'm fairly sure that my questions aren't answered by it. If they are, feel free to flame me to shit.

-No

-Too many factors to say a typical cost, like what sort of 4age, are you doing it yourself etc. etc.

-About 8L/100 km?

-Google and other searches are your friend.

Well that's good that they're not hard to find and 8L/100 sounds better than a stock engine? I dunno how to do it myself hey. Haha. I'd most likely have to pay someone to do it. I'm really not sure which 4age I want, that's what I was hoping people could suggest. I'll take a look on google and maybe ring some places.

Cheers. :D

1. Nope, 16 valve 4ages were delivered in AE82 twincam hatches. Buy a dinged or rusted one, freshen her up and put her in. Youll have loom, computer and all accessories that way. You will need rwd extractors too. They can be a bit tricky to find. Us ebay is good for them.

2. Could be as little as 2000 dollars all up, if you do the work. If you pay someone you will still need to source the right pedal box for a hydraulic clutch, a t50 gearbox and tailshaft, slave and master cylinder and clutch line. You'll also need a motor and all accessories, rwd pipes, new exhaust, and a mod plate, efi fuel pump, and surge tank, or a Jap ae86 fuel tank, with efi baffles to stop fuel surge.

3. Very easy on fuel. If the motor is freshened up it should pull 10klm/litre if you thrash it. My 20valve does. Never owned a 16 valve but it surely wouldnt be more with a standard ecu.

You have the perfect opportunity to build a tough 4age ke70, as you have one car to pull apart and one car to drive around in and get to work, while you take the other one off the road. That helps sooooooo much. More pics please!!

Thanks for the reply. :)

So I could buy an AE82 twincam hatch and have all the parts I need? Or will I still have to find everything you mentioned in post 2? I'm so glad to hear that it's good on fuel... haha. I really want to have a nice little corolla that's got a bit of power without losing too much in fuel money.

Yeah you've got a point there. I guess I should hold off on selling the red one then eh? Haha. I'm buying another KE70 on tuesday for around 1500 because it's practically in perfect condition and only had 2 owners. I guess I'll keep that one off the road since that's the one I wanna do up and use ol' red for driving. :)

More pics just like you asked:

There's a few more in this post which I'll probably have to temporarily hold off until I get my car sorted out: linkified!

I found some cheap cars which I think have 4AGE's in them on ebay: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

What do you guys think?

Just pick the hatch with the sweetest engine and the longest service history. Your obviously looking for some sweet mechanicals since you only want the motor/loom/ecu. I believe you can also use the radiator and thermofans, front seats and steering wheel in the ke70. Just buy whichever one has all of that in very good condition. You shouldn't have to pay more than 500 dollars.

You wil also need that whole list of parts I said in #2. As well as an ae71/86 engine crossmember and engine mounts, and the t50 gearbox crossmember and rubber mount which I forgot to say earlier. It will cost up to 500 dollars usually to get all those parts together, unless you can find a shagged ae71 to steal them from.

The really tricky things are doing the fuel system and the loom reconfiguration, as all the wire lengths may need to be modified to make it all sit where it should. Everything else is like lego. If the hatch you find has a good clutch and flywheel you will be able to use that too!

Ok, I don't understand what any of the parts really mean but from what I gather I need an AE82 corolla? As well as these parts:

- ae71/86 crossmember and engine mounts

- t50 gearbox crossmember and rubber mount

- pedal box for a hydraulic clutch

- a t50 gearbox and tailshaft, slave and master cylinder and clutch line

- rwd pipes

- new exhaust

- mod plate

- efi fuel pump

- surge tank, or a Jap ae86 fuel tank, with efi baffles to stop fuel surge

- rwd extractors

I should be buying the new car as soon as I get the front windshield replaced on my red one which means it will be in about a week's time. I guess I'm gonna have to start saving up to pay for the mechanic to put the engine and crap in. I would do it myself but I want it done properly and don't want to risk stuffing anything up.

Cheers for your help so far. :hmm:

and thats the value of the car just labour
