I just got a ke55 and the temp gauge wasn't working at all, and the fuel gauge only goes up to 3/4 even after putting a full tank in the ke55 had been sitting (without the radiator disconnected) for about 3 years, maybe more. So i tested the temp sender by earthing to wire going to it and the gauge went to hot, so obviously the sender is f@$ked from sitting in stagnant coolant and water for so long. Getting a new temp sender today as for the fuel gauge... like i said it only goes up to half way so i'm guessing that the float/sender unit in the petrol tank may be at fault?? is there anyway to remedy this without taking out the petrol tank??

Which Tyres Would You Recommend For A Ke55??
jackbyo replied to jackbyo's topic in KExx Corolla Discussion
hey guys, thanks for replies I'm gonna grab 2 pirelli p5 cinturano's for my rear axle. I've read they have a good tread life and strong grip in the rain. they've been superseded now so i've been lucky enough to find them at $75 a pop as a clearance rate otherwise i've been quoted $95 each for michelin energys which i hear are also good. hmmm -
Gotta get new rear tyres for my ke55 for rego don't want to spend much, so i looked at bob jane all-rounders. ive read that they are really shit in the rain. can anyone else recommend another type of tyre that'll fit stock wheels?? I was hoping to keep it under $100 a tyre cheers

heya whats the difference between halogen headlights and the stock ones?? Havent gotten reflectors yet, but i did get some bulbs the other day from repco. Marked as H4 plus 30, 12v 60/55w p43t. Didnt realise they were halogen. I had just asked the guy for bulbs to fit that rusty datsun headlight I had on me So now do I just need the reflectors same as the rusty one and I'm good to go?? The bulbs have the same male spade terminals as my old sealed beams, so I was thinking that i wouldn't need to change any wiring or anything, just stick them in cheers
-
Hey hey my headlights on my ke55 are dim and one highbeam is out. Anyway I took them out, and they are the sealed beam type. I found a rusty spare headlight from a datsun 280zx that was the same size and had the same female connectors on the back, except the bulb can be replaced in the reflector instead of the whole thing being a sealed unit. that one was rusty and fogged tho i've got some brand new bulbs that'll fit in, but I need the actually round reflector. I understand that it was probably a pretty common headlight size, but can anyone tell me what cars I might find them on?? I'm after the ones that the bulbs can be replaced in for ease in the future cheers Jack

Trying To Get Blue Slip... Told I Need To Replace Pitman Arm?
jackbyo replied to jackbyo's topic in KExx Corolla Discussion
i think this might be one for the mechanic to do... he said he'd be able to do it for under $100 if i track down the part. burson's said they can get me a new aftermarket one for $60... sounds pretty alright deal to me edit:repco will get the part for $40 ! Another thing written on the little list is that i need to find a rear center seat belt... i was under the impression that this car (ke55 2 door) was made to seat 4 only? -
Okay so i dropped my loverly hard top ke55 to my closest mechanic to get a blue slip, as it's been unregistered since 2008. They seem like decent dudes. the guy who does the blue slip has told me that he'll make me up a list of a few things I need to take care of (couple rust spots, a reverse light, etc) but he also mentioned that the pitman arm is worn and needs replacing. Now, he does know that I just wanna get the list off him and try to get everything done myself, but I'm worried about this pitman arm thing because i'm thinking it might be a mechanic only kinda job... is that right or is it one for me to learn? also if I need to track down this part, can i just get the pitman arm off any other 4k engine?? thanks

okay so i'm getting all this ignition stuff sorted on my ke55. getting a starlet electronic dizzy and a bosch ignitor. For now i was thinking to leave the stock coil coz of my budget and because the rest of the engine is totally stock too, so not too worried about getting a bigger hotter spark just yet. anyway I've been told that the ignitor module needs a full 12v connection and that the coil probably has a ballast resistor and as such i need to make sure i hook the ignitor module to the right terminal so is there a diagram or photo where someone can show me where to hook this ignitor up to? Hope this all makes sense cheers
-
cheers mate i looked around and found out that a bosch BIM024 is exactly the ignitor i'm after. supercheap has em for $60 brand new, or yeah like you said magnas and heaps of older holdens have em found the info here eventually. there's a link there to a list of cars that use those ignitors too if anyones ever looking and yeah this starlet dizz is a reluctor type too btw
-
topic says it all really I've got a reconditioned distributor on the way from the states it's from a 1982 4kc toyota starlet. seller tells me that it needs an external ignitor and does not come with one so what's a common ignitor that will work with it? I've searched the forums and google but it's not working for me new/used doesnt matter but cheap is good! cheers
-
Hey sorry but just to clarify, do you mean that the one I bought on ebay also has an internal ignitor, as well as the one you've posted there?? cheers
-
Reconditioned electronic dizzy from a starlet listed above is on sale for $35 USD for the next 24 hours only! 12 of them still available http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...em=400043890093 I just bought it, with postage of $55 USD to Sydney that came to just under $110 AUD just need an ignitor now... anyone know where I can find one that'll suit?

thanks so much mate, that picture was exactly what i needed took off all the shit and got the spring on. It's from bunnings and is a bit too short so it was a real bitch to get it on But it works! It's hard to open coz of the tighter spring, but that's just like my hood has child safety thanks again!

okay digging up an old thread here, but i noticed that ebay link is still active anyway i'd really like to put an electric dizzy in my ke55 4k stock engine. Can I just buy this off ebay (says from 1.3 4kc engine like mine, just for a starlet) and just get a mechanic to put it in for me?? anything else i need to buy (igniter? resistor???) ive read over the faq, and i ebay searched for toyota liteace distributor and came up with nothing cheers
-
yeah the actual chrome piece when you say try a wrecker, is that in hopes that they'll have that exact piece, or that they'll have a different one that could be cut to fit?? cheers

Hey the bonnet release under the steering wheel went unspringy, and could be pulled out but had to be pushed back in The bonnet is released, and can be opened like normal with the lever at the front, but it can't be clicked back into the locked close position. It's like the release lever under the steering wheel is always pulled out so i inspected and found a small spring was broken. I bought a spring from bunnings that was as close as i could get, but a bit shorter and a bit fatter that the rusty broken stock one. It's the shiny silver one circled in blue, and it's hanging where i found one half of the broken one the other 2 stock springs are fine, the medium sized one (red circle) that the opener lever is attached to, and the large one (green circle) that seems to make the lock stay open so anyone know what i'm supposed to attach the new spring to? I'm assuming the cable from the bonnet release inside the car needs to connect to the spring as well, but how? I've got a gregorys manual, which details the boot lock very well but doesnt mention the bonnet latch what so ever. if anyone has a haynes or toyota service manual (probably very similar for ke30, ke70 etc) and it says how the latch goes together, could you scan it or explain it? Cheers

Topic says it all Recommend mechanics who you think are good and fair, and who preferably have some good knowledge of classic rollas! Cheers
-
sorry i'd search it but i still don't really know what it's called which is making it really hard to search for it even on rare spares
-
where do I get one of these things for the left hand side for my coupe ke55? What's it even called so I can search better. my brain hurts thanks
-
Hey hey I did read the article here http://www.rollaclub.com/faq/index.php?title=Stud_Pattern and it says "Any Datsun/Nissan up to 1989" just wanted to clarify that this means I could just slap on a set of wheels off my brothers 1982 280zx?
-
Any chance someone saved the pics and we can get them back up again??? cheers

About To Look At A 1980 Fastback For Around $1000
jackbyo replied to jackbyo's topic in KExx Corolla Discussion
Hey guys!! Thanks for all the responses! well I went to have a look today. Only the boyfriend (both are non drivers) was there and the car is practically buried in junk in the garage. I could just manage to squeeze an arm through to pop the hood Saw the plate saying that it's a KE55 with a 4K-C (cheers red dwarf). I looked hard for rust where I could. Couldnt see any in the engine bay, was a slight peppering on one rear wheel arch and a little bit more on the other rear wheel arch, but getting under the back of it I couldn't see any. Rego ran out in 08, Odometer read just 47,500 or so kms, which correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt that damn low for a 30 year old car? Anyways, he said he'll clean the garage in the next couple days and push it out and I can come have a better look. I figured I'd bring a jerry can of petrol and see if she'll start. Anything else I should do before I try to start it? Change the oil for instance? Oh yeah and the owners friend, who is my friend, told me that the owner told my friend that she would let it go for $850 ! should I just jump on this before anyone else has a chance to see it??? Thanks heaps guys! -
Hey hey Looking at buying a ke30 or ke55 (owner can't remember which it is) for real cheap, but it's an auto Naturally I'd love a manual, and this will be my first project car. So reading over the FAQ i've deduced that the easiest conversion would be a K40/K50 gearbox, so I don't have to worry about tracking down rare bellhousings, or installing a hydraulic clutch etc And am I right in saying that they can be had for under $100 aussie? I don't have any experience, but I am keen to learn and this is like the whole point for me of buying an old car. Is it crazy hard??
