  1. In all honesty I would say look for a welding course and it would mean ten times more than any welder specs,

one point people seem to miss is you actually have to be able to weld before buying a welder.

i disagree. you can learn quite a lot from buying a welder and just laying beads. will give you at least a slight idea about what your doing, so the poor tafe teacher wont have to completely baby you.

but i agree on the tafe course bit, absolutely essential if you want welds that have any chance of passing engineer's requirements.

its a bit late now, but late last year i bought a cigweld weldskill 250a single phase MIG.

its a cracker of a welder for the home hobbyist. uses 15kg spools, euro torch plug, can do aluminium, has all the basic adjustments, and came in under $1k.

only thing its missing is the 'inverter', but mine will never leave the shed, so i don't need it :)

  2. Mate welding diffs is piss easy if you know how to weld.

Drop the crownwheel & carrier assembly out and give it to a boilermaker. Any engineering shop should be able to do it. Just give it to them complete and tell them it has to go back the same way it came apart, with no slag/splatter in the axle splines or the mating faces. once its done pull it apart again and religiulously clean everything and double check for splatter. If thats all good reassemble and fill with oil. then robert will be your mums sibling.

  3. Hey guys, nearly ready to get my AE82 on the road but ive got a problem with the fuel tank getting pressurised and pushing fuel past the fuel pump (car is on duel fuel) and hence running like shit.

Ive had the tank out and made sure all the lines are clear. The charcoal canister isnt blocked etc. Basically ive traced it back to the purge valve.

Now the purge valve does work, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what tells it to turn on and off? I'm thinking one of the vacuum solenoids, but I'm not sure which one.

So if someone knows it would be much appreciated. I can then much around with vacuum ports to modify the way it works.

Oh btw ive tried leaving disconnecting it so the purge valve stays open all the time but the car runs rough and stalls so i don't really consider it a viable solution.

    Thanks guys, cameron.

  4. Hahhhaha me just don't give a crap and just drive to my abilities :P yeah mine prob handles crap but u drive around it ;)

not tryin to make excuses mate, just lettin ya know how it went down. come back out for the next race and i shall try to be first rolla home for once :D

  5. nup. had 5 when i bought it. ive now got 2.5 or 3.5 in it iirc, and no rear bar.. TBH i havent spent a cent on the whole car since i bought it so its not suprising its not great to drive. don't worry I'm not complaining.. its shitloads of fun to drive and very rewarding when you get it right.

  6. That KE25 looks like it was being driven to Woolies by my mum (says me from behind the wheel of my computer :D )

    arsehole!! :)

yeah i was having some major issues on the day. *insert motorsport excuses here*

the car doesnt handle at the best of times, but i was having more trouble than usual on the day. turns out id left the tyres at 28psi. turned the rears down to 22psi and it was like a new car. unfortunately i did that on the 2nd last test as i was busy helping a few juniors and keeping my mate entertained.

add to the fact i decided to take an agressive apporach to the day, i ended up spinning 5 times and hitting a cone (cone was completely my fault)

    /motorsport excuses

parrot, if you don't believe me your more than welcome to have a go at my car at any race :) goes well in a straight line, problem is keeping it straight lol!

  7. Good point- how do bikes get around the lack of a pump jet? The SUs have the oil dashpot delay the piston rising so it immediately richens for a second or two when you boot it, but I haven't seen those on bike carbs.

yeah not sure tbh, just read other "bike carbs onto car motor" threads over the years which mentioned some don't come with accelerator pumps.

Surely max air flow should be-

max revs X 1500=12000 X 600.... so max revs=12000X600/1500 or about 4800rpm on your 5K will suck the same air flow as that Honda pulling 12000rpm. Those carbs could be a bit small.

daves calculations were based on a 4k, not a 5k. you would think the carbs would be too small, but remember, pretty much every bike head from the 60's/70's will be more efficient than a K head. like i said before, something around 34/36mm or 32ish mm in a flatslide or barrel would do the job nicely imho. i think most bike carbs this size were on 1L+ bikes.

  9. i havent had a close look at a corolla interior light, but most of the ones ive seen have constant 12v.

the earth when the switch is in the door postition goes to the little earth switches you have in the photos.

when the switch is in the constant on position, there is a circuit that goes to the mounting screws that earths on the body, hence no extra wiring for this position.
