  1. My carb was never 'set up'. Might be time to find out how! I am looking forward to your pics.
  2. That's a fair good article. So richening up will give you more power?
  3. As for the engine: Could it be the timing chain against the cover? Perhaps you could actually check the oil pump for blockages or whatever?
  4. Well it would appear that I'm wrong and I stand corrected. My apologies. Whatever you do, have fun with it.
  5. Why don't you try putting in the original idle jet only and see if that fixes the problem? That way, you will still have the power of the bigger jet and a good idle. Just an idea. You still need stoichiometric mixture of 14.7:1 if you are going to run a combustion engine, even if you have a lumpy cam or not (or so i believe).
  6. Yeah I know that, but still isn't it the case? Won't run on oversized jets. Still better off with a larger carby.
  7. Ok since no one has posted I wil add my 2 bob. I'm no guru, In fact I'm only 18y.o, but doesn't it seem a little odd to you that are putting jets that are meant to run on a 1500cc on a 1200cc? Set your timing to 8 degrees. No point buggerising around with advanced timing if your engine doesn't even idle. It'll ping under load with timing like that anyway. Keep that for later. Get a cheap engine analyser and set the idle speed to exactly 750rpm. Or if you can't do that, just guess a speed. You're usually within 50-100rpm anyway. You quoted "shitty little carbs". Mate, they mightn't be the best carbs around but they do the job, until fools decide to put oversized jets in them. Just leave it how it is. Anyway, I hope the rebuilt 3k goes well for you. It all seems good, apart from the oversized jets. Just put the standard ones back in, and it should be sorted. If you need more power, the only way to do it is to get a bigger carb. A few suggestions are 32/36 Webers (usually off Escorts) which do need downjetting, and Nikki's off Izuzu Gemini's.
  8. So is it the throttle plate that is causing the leak? If so, I think your car may not be getting enough fuel because it's leaking out of the side. Is it difficult to start? Second hand Aisan carbs can be had for cheap I believe. If you can't get one, try find a Nikki off a Gemini. They are said to be highly underrated, and only need a different adaptor plate to fit. It's in the FAQ. If that doesn't work, for your own good, call this number: SANE Australia Helpline: 1800 18 SANE
  9. Perhaps a good idea. But if he doesn't have $200-$300 to get a good one, (like me) he has to make do wih what he has.
  10. I can pretty much say it's gonna be the carby. If I come down a hill, downshifting to 3500rpm each gear, and then accelerate around a corner, it'll give a jolt and take a split second to take off. I'm thinking this means a lean idle mixture, or in your case really lean. Or really rich. I'm probably not telling you anything you don't know, but the only thing that will give you these effects is definately the carby. Petrol on the outside of a carby is not normal. How does it go up at say, 60kp/h in fourth? Does it jolt along? Bog down terribly on acceleration? And are you sure you have the idle mix adjusted correctly? That sounds like your problem right there. Before you go to take off, give the accelerator a blip and see if this is any better.
  11. Are you sure it's the diff? Maybe it's a wheel out of balance or a wheel bearing? First thing's first I suggest you check the diff oil. Just take off the plug thing and dip your finger in. You should be able to touch it and it should be relatively clean. Jack up your ride and check the wheels for noise. When you do it, stop the other side from turning too. I don't really understand why it would happen at that speed. Have you eliminated the gearbox yet? That happens to mine in 4th gear. BTW: KE55 and KE70 are very alike Jimmy
  12. Well I wasn't thinking about doing that much. Maybe just the things I have to do. Like this: Rebuild gasket set, $120 plus. Probably need one of these after taking apart Pistons. $160 Rather, just a new set of rings Big end and main bearings. $100. (See how they are upon inspection) Cam bearings. $ 35. (instalation $80) Install myself (unless its a machine job?) Cylinder boring. $100. Get dad to bring a hone home from work Cam regrind. $150 (Get a really lumpy one made) Extractors. $ 250. Can't really see the point for a 1300cc Weber adapter plate. $45. Weber. $100-$200. $60 (just a head shave to ensure straightness) Head shave for higher compression. $75 plus. =about $600 all up. Please tell me what I have missed here. I have bugger-all money because I'm young, and also I have to save to get the body of the car fixed.
  13. I have a feeling the valve tappets are so worn that if I adjusted them to fully down, they would still tick. The engine's done 113000k's but drinks oil like it's going out of fashion. What is 8 and 12 thou (ex)?
  14. How much can this cost If I do it myself? I would like to keep the 4k in it and have it running 32/36's or whatever in the future, but if it's going to be blowing smoke and being noisy I'm not going to bother, I'll just slot in a 5k.
  15. Hi guys :y: My little shitty 4k is very noisy and is starting to irritate me. Not the noise from the exhaust, but the noises from up front like ticks and rattles and stuff. I understand the tappets make a bit of noise and would like to know how to get them as quiet as possible, I do have a Manual. But there is a lot of other funny little noise, so I would just like to know any suggestions and what it could be, and how I can stop it. Thanks fella's
  16. Yeah it is leaking from the threaded fitting on the left drum brake. That one was your right drum. It is considerably shorter. Seems I got ripped off, but there is a lack of brake shops in Newcastle.
  17. Ok, thought you deserved an update. I went to the shop and asked them to replicate the hardline I took in. Two hours later I came back, and all they had done was flare the ends of a piece of pipe, and used my original ends, all for 20 bucks which I think is a bit steep, no bending or anything. So I go to put it back on, sorta bent it to shape but not really, and pumped the pedal to check for leaks. It leaked a little and I want to know if this is normal first off, without bleeding the brakes. Anyway, I think that's it now, just have to bleed the brakes and that's it. Tell me if I've missed anything please. Jimmy
  18. Nah it's the hard line, sorry. I'm gonna need a 10mm crow's foot-type spanner to remove it right?
  19. Thanks to all who replied. So if I was to take the piping to a mechanic or pipe place to get it replicated, what about the fittings on either end? Does anyone know the sizes and how to fit them onto the pipe?
  20. So Cam, Where did you get these replacement lines from. I really want to avoid going into the mechanics.
  21. G'Day all, Just yesterday my brakes went all funny and they wouldn't work, had myself using the handbrake to stop instead. Had a little peek underneath and the little brake fluid pipe thing on the rear left-hand side of the car was leaking fluid, and when you pump the pedal with the engine off, it will spray like a jet. Now my question is, is this easy to fix? Can and do I need to get a replacement pipe thingo or is it possible to fix it with some special tape or something like that? Does a mechanic bend and fit a pipe or can I get some myself and do it? I would prefer to do it myself as I am short on cash atm. Thankyou in advance for any help you may be able to offer.
  22. Yep, the time has come. I finally crashed the 'Rolla. Slid around a corner at an acceptable speed and was hit by another car. The other one is from doing doey's in an empty field and hit a rock. I know this is probably in the wrong place but I need some advice. Is this worth fixing?, or should I just sell it for cheap to one of you guys and buy a Falcon? I mean, the car dosent really suit my needs, I'm 6"5' and it gives me a sore back. I love it but is it really worth the money and would anyone in Newcastle like a wad of cash to do it? <BR>
  23. This sounds interesting... Isn't it already cover in FAQ that if you put more than 8-10psi forced induction through a 4k you need to start making modifications? Pistons, bottom end bearings, stronger crankshaft etc.
  24. HAHAHA that's funny shit. I did that once by accident and it scared me stupid. Drove home with my tail between my legs. Anyway, I'll pass on that. Got some good advice so far, thanks guys. Anyone know prices on full systems like Hiro's?
  25. Yes please! I love that popping and crackling sound. Strange thing is you can get that sound from the stock exhaust if you try hard enough!
