  1. I just picked this up two weeks ago today. So far I have been still sorting this car. The first day I got it I power washed the exterior. Had one tire fixed for a leaky valve stem. Vacuumed the interior and found 4 baby mice under the front passenger seat :hmm: the carpets smell like mouse piss :bash: , so i have to remove that and shampoo and disinfect it too. i bought two mouse traps and used peanut butter as bait hopefully i'll catch the critter soon. :) The next day I pulled the one of the door tumblers so I can have keys made as this car never came with keys. Finally got the trunklid opened and installed the tumbler lock, wirebrushed the surface rust on the wheel well which btw still has an unused original spare tire. Yesterday got the hood opened finally (broken cable). Today I fixed the wiring to the ignition module soldered and removed the extra wires the PO put in who BTW butchered the ignition :bash: , tried to fire up the engine but the starter was erratic I had to whack the solenoid area with a cold chisel now I need to replace the starter :bash: . Now I'm gonna check the ignition and see if I have spark on the points and plugs. I'll have lunch and a beer break then work on it later in the day when the temps are cooler. Details: 1970 KE17 Sprinter with a Toyoglide Automatic, number 27,660 of the production line. North American spec model with the bumperettes front and back, and rear side marker lights. Light yellow with two tone brown and black interior. 38,xxx miles. This car is bone stock all original. Needs TLC and a few parts I need parts so please PM what you have you can see from the pics what parts I'll be needing asap. Cheers, Dave
  2. my thanks to felix for the tip on opening the hood with a broken cable. this car is testing my patience :hmm: but i'll prevail. now another problem came up this time it is the starter. finally got the hood to open and charged the battery. the starter worked for a bit and stopped, so i hit the solenoid with a long cold chisel and a hammer and it worked again then stopped. now i need to replace this bugger. i know it will be a pain to remove. the best bet is to remove the intake manifold? nothing against the 3k engine but it is a lousy design as far as accessbility to the starter is concerned plus putting it underneath the exhaust manifold makes it even worse as it will have starting problems when the engine is so hot! why did they have to put the intake, exhaust and starter all in one side/spot? my question is can i use a later reduction gear starter from a kp61 starlet? it is the same engine just not sure if there will be a fitment problem considering the tight space. so can i use the reduction gear starter for this engine too? cheers, dave
  3. damn just snapped on me yesterday, i was gonna give her a tune up and old change. can someone help me by telling me how to open the hood? thanks, dave
  4. Hey grinogjj. I need parts for my KE17 and you said there is one in the junkyard you are going to? I am in Toronto Canada. Can you get these parts for me? I'll pay you $$$ for all of it. Complete Ignition Tumbler and The column covers for it. Front turn signal lenses. Gauge cluster with tachometer mine never had one as it is an automatic. Clutch pedal and rod (just get the whole pedal assembly if you could) "Sprinter" script lettering mine is missing. on the top of the trunklid PM me. Dave
  5. Hello Everyone I am new to this group, I need help with my KE17 I just picked up a 1970 KE17 Sprinter with a Toyoglide slushbox. 38xxx original miles on it. The original spare is still unused on this car! I am in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. I heard there are only 1 or 2 KE17's in Ontario. See pics at KE17 pics Okay I need a few parts asap to get this running. This car came with 4 wheel drum brakes so I will need 4 new wheel cylinders or should I convert the fronts to disc. If I convert the fronts to disc what parts do I need to make it work on this car and still use the original wheels. I wanted to convert to a later KE2X with the 4 x 100 bold pattern can I do all 4 (front discs and rear drums)? This car did not come with keys and I badly need keys and tumbler locks for the doors, trunklid and gas cap lid and an ignition tumbler. I also need the steering column cover for the ignition too which Toyota model uses the same covers, tumbler and ignition locks?? These are top mounted ones. Pls check my pictures. The hood cable is broken and I cannot open the hood for now. How co I open it without the cable? From the front? or from the inside? The car is not bad for it's age and considering it is in a rust belt area where salt is used in the winter to melt the snow. The interior is in very good condition. The only rip is on the back seat just on the top. The body needs some work there is rust on a portion of the rocker panel on the driver's side and front fender. Can you still get fenders for this car? The car originally came it that yellowish beige color. Since I am having this car repainted I was thinking about changing the color to red using an original factory color of Helios Red T-1507, is this a period correct color for this car? I got this color from a paint shop here as they had an old paint book chart there. A friend of mine with an old TA22 told to paint it the original paint but I really don't like that color and this car will stand out better in red. Now I have checked the FAQ and I could use a T50 5 speed on the 3k engine with an adaptor plate and I don't need to widen the tunnel. The only thing I need to do this conversion is the Clutch pedal and ancilliaries and the clutch cable? I'll do this conversion maybe later. The slush should be good for a bit. I do have to change the tranny fluid on this 39 year old car with 38K miles on it or not? I will need new rubber gaskets I check in ebay and you can still get the ones for the doors, trunklids, windshield and back glass. What about the windows on the doors and the rear quarter windows can you still get them new? One more thing I need a gauge that has the tachometer. Anyone here has one for sale? Cheers, Dave
  6. Hello I am new to the rollaclub. I just bought a 1970 KE17 Sprinter with an automatic :P . I do not want the automatic of course. So I was thinking about dropping a 2t/3t with a t50, will these be easy to do? I know the easiest would be a 4k or 5k modified with this cars 3k head? and twin side drafts with a t50. Does the t50 need to be modified as far as cross member and tail shaft ends? I definitely will upgrade the front supension with something later that has disc brakes on it and a later rear end from a later corolla model. So what is the best suspension and brake upgrade? How about dropping a BMW M10 motor and tranny? I have three of them in my garage So this is the most cost effective on for me.
