SoulSearcher Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Ok, I'm planning on some work to broomdie, and I want to paint the calipers... Q: how difficult would it be (for someone like me who doesn't know what they're doing) to paint them? If I can't do it, who COULD do it?? secondly I want to get the air intake housing that goes all around the inside of the engine bay chromed and the joints in that coloured neoprene stuff (or what ever it is - can some one tell me?) Q: would the difference between the existing piping and the chrome piping make a difference temperature wise and if not who would I go to get something like that done??? Thank you Lesley :P Quote
Raven Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 The shorter your inlet piping, the better the engine response as far as I know. Keep that in mind. Painting calipers is fairly simple. Use high temp engine paint and prep the calipers well (make sure they are ultra clean). Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Or use brake paint!!! It lasts for years and years Quote
MYSTIK[RL] Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Or use brake paint!!! It lasts for years and years 2nd :P Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 It's like it was MADE for brakes hehe Quote
SoulSearcher Posted December 6, 2006 Author Report Posted December 6, 2006 OK, you need to dumb it down for me even more (I kinda figured I needed special paint), but do I need to take them off, and if so, how do I do it? This is what I've figured out.... jack the car up take off wheel .....then what.... clean and prepare the surface paint put back on (but HOW?) Also, I know shorter piping .... and all that but I have to keep it standard for about another 9 months from memory so by replacing it with the same I'm not voiding my warranty....(and we know how much i LOVE my warranty!!). I was more concerned that if the chromed piping is of a different weight or is more conductive the heat will transfer and warm up the air = bad Thank you :P Lesley :( Quote
Des Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Before you pull apart your car get some brake fluid if you do it my way. After you have taken the wheel off undo the brake hose from the caliper and fluid will go every where just don't let it touch your paint work and make sure you have the right sized spanner so you don't round off the hose nut. Undo the two bolts on the back of the caliper and the caliper will come off and the pads will either fall out or little wire clips holding them in place. This is what it will look like once the caliper is removes and the rotor(disc) removed. You can see the hose is still attached but it is easier to get it undone while the caliper is still on the car. once you have painted the calipers and they are dry put them back on in reverse order and refill the brake resivior under the bonnet and bleed the system with another person to help you as it easier with 2. hope i helped Des :P Quote
MYSTIK[RL] Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) whoops double post :P Edited December 6, 2006 by MYSTIK Quote
MYSTIK[RL] Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) jack the car up take off wheel .....then what.... clean and prepare the surface using also if ur calipers already have paint use a bit of sand paper to rough the old paint up so the new paint sticks paint using obviously u need to mask the rotor and surrounding area so u don't get over spray on everything let the paint dry put the wheel back on then stand back and admire ur handy work :P Edited December 6, 2006 by MYSTIK Quote
SoulSearcher Posted December 7, 2006 Author Report Posted December 7, 2006 ok, I'm totally cheating on the painting the calipers....when I get my mags I asked the guy there if he'd do it for me and he said YES - for $50 bucks!!!!! So I think I'm getting a bargain! I've sourced the stainless steel polished piping and I'm also getting the rocker cover polished and the exhaust heat shield. I'm getting some carbon fibre work done and braided hoses. Then I'm going to get fitted seat covers and then I'm done - I'm expecting to get the bulk of it done in the next 2 months and then I'll get rest of it done next year. THEN we start on the MR2 :P Lesley Quote
Des Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 (edited) Oh your not getting away from the dirty calipers that easy lol nah, $50 for some one else to paint them is pretty good :P Edited December 7, 2006 by too quick Quote
