Hi People,

Today was really, really interesting.....

I was on my way back to the shop this evening, (it was dark) and I saw some flashing red and white lights off on the footpath at ground level. I couldn't see what it was and couldn't figure out what it was so I did a U-turn and went back to investigate...I was first on the scene...

It was a push bike lying on it's side (from a distance) I started walking towards it and couldn't really make out anything until I got closer a person!... heart in my mouth I ran towards him , the bike was still tangled in his legs, he'd hit a fallen tree and gone flying over the handle bars. I assured him that he wasn't alone and although he was hurting, help was on it's way (meanwhile luckily I had my daughter with me she was flagging down cars and two people stopped) I got him onto his side and we managed to stop the bleeding from his head, nose and mouth, get his backpack off and try to get his name, he was semi concious and freezing cold. The ambulance finally arrived they put on a neck brace and a back board and got him on a stretcher.

I got his bike and took it to my shop and managed to turn the flashing lights off.

I'd just like to alert people about accidents, and how to possibly assist in them, and how you can protect your property, isn't hindsight wonderful?!

So, maybe if you own a push bike perhaps put a sticker or something on it with your full name and contact number, (this man was concussed and couldn't remember anything but his first name).

Also I didn't have a first aid kit, lukily the 2nd person on the scene did so we had pads to staunch the bleeding (there was alot).

Also, perhaps having a picnic blanket so that he could have been kept warm would have been a good thing too... it's not much to carry around, first aid kit and a blanket..... that's on my shopping list for tomorrow... (I have both a first aid kit and blanket in both my other cars, but not the one I drive the most!! *kicks self*)

You might want to try calling the hospital to find out his name so you can return the bike.

Congratulations on a great effort though. Too many people nowadays seem too keen to ignore the plight of others.

oh, I've just come home from the hospital, he has no family here, and he wasn't "with it" yet (still confused and on pain killers), I left my business card, I contacted one of his friends (who's going down tomorrow with a change of clothes for him - they had to cut them all off...) and let them know that the bike is safe and where they can collect it from and that there's no hurry...and I've also left letters at his work and on his bosses car! - the Hills is a tight-knit community :sob: he's got a bad concussion (obviously) and a non scary brain bleed, he's had some stitches and he looks really, REALLY bad, lots of facial bruising, black eyes and still a lot of blood, but he's going to be ok, thank goodness...

Blanket is a good idea too..

well he regained conciousness yesterday about 12 noon, he woke up and didn't know how he got to the hospital, didn't remember me and wondered why he had my business card!! They're keeping him in until Friday (probably PM) and he'll swing by on Saturday or early next week, the worst part of his injuries as of today is a broken finger, the brian bleed has rectified itself ..... that man is so lucky, he shoud buy a lottery ticket!!!
