Yes, I drove the car part of the way home with no clutch, and I know it's possible. But only in the forward gears, and only after 1st gear I think... Reverse gear appears to be impossible to engage with the engine running... And you can't stop at lights, or intersections, or control speed when going slow...

 

And yes, reversed the car down the driveway and then back up the driveway into the garage on the starter motor last night. Didn't unplug the leads though, and yes, the car started ;)

 

Cameron: I think I might swap the whole spare engine+gearbox combination, it'll probably be easiest...

fook, i don't know about swapping the whole lot being easiest. you will have bugs to sort in the replacement motor like dodgy electrics etc.

if you need a car to borrow my stock ke70 will be free after tomorrow morning, if not, can't you crack the gearbox off and move it back enough to have room to play, or do you need to get the motor out to get to the box?

No, there is absolutely no room to crack the gearbox off. There is about 5mm clearance on either side of the engine/gearbox between the chassis rails. Anyway, old engine is out, and new engine is now sitting in the engine bay. Just need to hook everything back up, do a bit of wiring, cross my fingers, and hope for the best...

This must be a camry problem, my bros camry wags did exactly the same thing only 2 months ago, the bad news is out comes the motor and box, damn. On the bright side, a brand new clutch fork was only $50 which is cheap for genuine parts.
