Hey guys, as the post says above I'm asking for a little bit of help with my escort, its a 1980 ford escort sedan 4dr (ill try and get some pics up tomorrow) , thats all i know about it, and the solenoid has broken, I'm guessing its called the starter solenoid, i bought a new one, but stupid me didnt take a picture of it before i pulled all the wires off of it to take it into the shop to get a new one, and now i have no idea where which wires are supposed to go, if any one know where the wires are supposed to go it would be a great help, if not if somebody could point me in the right direction that would be great too, thanks guys.

cheers harley

Wrong car forum for this since we're all toyota nuts here BUT since you asked so nicely...

There should be two wires from your starter (well, there is on a toyota) one is a control wire from the ignition (thats the spade terminal) the other is the postive wire from the battery (terminal with a nut on it).

So hook them up like that.

Thick gauge wire from battery to the solenoid goes on the nut terminal (should be a positive).

Small control wire from the ignition goes onto the spade terminal.

The starter motor earths to ground via being bolted to the gearbox/motor (on a Toyota K motor it does).

A bigger pic would help though.

Cheers

It should work like any other relay, 2 sides, The control circuit and the load circuit. The heavy gauge wire should be the load side - One from the battery, The other to the starter (Goes to the two big terminals). Also should have an earth (Or earth to the body) and the signal wire that activates the solenoid..

I can't say I've come across a starter with an external solenoid, Most starter solenoids are attached to the starter. Or is this just being used like a relay to get good power to the starter?
