Fiberglassing My Dash...

Recommended Posts

I'm working on my dash.

I wanted some thing LIKE this just were the small gages are.

107.jpg

this is what i had and wanted the gages to face me more eg on an angle.

010906005mf1.th.jpg

so what I'm going to do is cut some pool pipe 560mm that the gages fit very sung in.

010906009eh0.th.jpg

wile i was going to do this i thought i would fix my first cup i made.

010906007rz6.th.jpg010906008jy1.th.jpg

so i cut the pipe at an angle (i just guessed the angle i needed)

010906012bb6.th.jpg

and all 3 in there

010906015yw9.th.jpg

started glassing..

i just put a little hot glue to hold the cups..

010906019pe9.th.jpg

and i decided that the gages should be spreed out more rather than bunched up. i added the plastic i cut off the end to the middle bits to make it stronger.

and made shore the gages looked right.

and the 1st bit of glass

just put a little glass on the back to strengthen it..

010906027ii6.th.jpg

i sanded the fiberglass a little and then started bogging it up..

010906028rb0.th.jpg

theres a lot of bog as this is were the shape will come from.

all so sanded the crack in the old cup back a bit and bogged that up as well..

010906029vn1.th.jpg

some people have PMed me and asked how i made the 1st cup so here a little run down no pic sorry i just sort of put it together.

its the same as how I'm making the new one just one bit of pipe about 560mm its from bunnings its actually pool filter pipe just take your gage along to make shore it fits snugly and then fiberglass the pipe to hold it then bog it up... easy hay.

STILL bogging and sanding but looking better..

just about finished sanding had to put a little more bog in some holes.

it looks a bit ruff because i used 2 different bogs but it nice and smooth.

dscf0006xf4.th.jpg

and finished the cup just have to paint.

dscf0008vs0.th.jpg

put a thin layer of paint on. its primer sealer when it drys its like the plastic use to be a Little ruff (it hides bad bits)

i do this so if theres bit that was bad i can just sand a little.

when this drys i will be putting about 2 more cotes on then sand smooth then put a clear cote on it...

added clear... and finished

its all done now...

170906008qf3.th.jpg

just some more pic because i know you all love pic and

i thought because i had the weal off i would get some pic.

dash004nk0.th.jpgdash005xj5.th.jpgdash009lh9.th.jpg

and thought i would point out a little stuff up (be for someone else doestongue.gif )

this one i did not square off the hazed switch.

and can you see a like bubble above the switch?

that was hardened resin that was so hard to sand back but took

it back heaps and thought the paint would cover it up but alas it did not.

dash006ff6.th.jpg

and here i did not round the edge that much as i wanted and i

scuffed the paint when i was puting it back in.

dash007yk8.th.jpg

all in all I'm REALLY happy with it.

it did take a bit of time (manly sanding) but had fun making it.

it cost me all up id say about $24-$26 as i had most of the stuff in the garage from last time.

I'm now doing a dash for a mate for his ke 70

this is what i started with..

030707001mp6.th.jpg

and wanted something like this..

300607016ig1.th.jpg

so i cut 3 bits of the same pipe i used befor..

030707002ol5.th.jpg030707006ds6.th.jpg

the angle there on..

030707004jw4.th.jpg

i made more room for the cups to fit by cutting some plastic away..

030707008ol6.th.jpg

1st one in using a hot glue gun to hold in place..

030707009kj5.th.jpg

2nd one in..

030707011ah0.th.jpg

and all 3 in making shore there all on the right angle i wanted..

030707014kn0.th.jpg

once the glue had dried i then started glassing the back of the dash 1st to give it strength..

030707002tv0.th.jpg

the back..

030707005so0.th.jpg

and then started glassing the front..

030707003px0.th.jpg

and some more on the back..

030707004te2.th.jpg

then after alot of fileing and sanding i boged it up..

160707001qx2.th.jpg

i did not use even 1/2 the amount of bog i used on my dash.

this is were I'm up to ATM needs sanding then maybe a little more bog, then sand again, then primer and paint.

if any body would like a dash done like this PM me.

i would be interested in doing a RA28 or 22/23

Man you really did part of that the hard way!!

After you have glued down your rings, stretch some t-shirt paterial over the section you want curverd (where you built up bog). The t-shirt material will stretch out neatly and give you nice curves. Then just paint some fibreglass resen over it and it will go hard. Give it a few coats and mininal bog to finish.

BTW, thats not how I did the dash below, that was just drilled and sanded MDF.

  • 2 weeks later...

Nice work mate. I work with fibreglass for a living as I'm a boatbuilder. The only bad thing is that fibreglass doesn't stick to plastic that well so over time it may delaminate. I'm thinking of doing my whole dash, not just the facia, in my ke35. I helped my brother do his rx-7's we basically just peeled all the plastic vinyl off and just fibreglassed straight on to the foam underneath. Then just bog and faired the whole thing.

Anywayz good work :)
