Hey guys how are you all?

 

well I just got my hands on my first corolla. shes a great little car, KE30, four speed manual but it seems she has a couple of issues :)

 

the thing is, i can't start her with the key. when i turn it to ignition, she just clicks or sometimes on the rare occasion she'll actually turn over, but so slow that she doesnt actually do anything. Ive read in another thread that you can put a relay in to make her start and get rid of the problem, but the description was a bit vague. Would anyone be able to help?

ok, the slow turnover sounds like the battery is on the way out (or has already died).

 

the clicking thing that happens when you go to turn it over is a sticky solenoid in the starter motor i think, as my parts car did this. i'd have to keep turning the key from ON to START repeatedly (around 10-15 tries) until it finally turned over.

oh yeah and another thing, me and my grandfather jump started her and still, nothing. Based on this we said the starter motor is rooted, but then i read here that the wiring to it can cause voltage drop and hence you install a relay into her and you wont have anymore problems. Thing is, where would you put the relay?

After all the other dramas I had, the starter motor sometimes simply clicks. I put in a 2nd hand starter motor but it does the same thing. I have disconnected and checked all connections.

 

Has anyone ever had the ignition switch play games? I am wondering if that last little bit

(start) in the iggy switch is dead or dying. Has anyone had this problem? Is it common?

 

If it is I will simply reroute wires and put in a starter button like my old FJ.

Ah the common k-motor starter problem. Really easy fix mate. Just wire in a relay to the starter motor solenoid and you'll never have the problem again.

The wire toyota ran originally must be pretty crap cause ive had to do it too 2 of my corollas. Good luck mate

yeah i was confused by the output as well, although previous to this i was revving the motor alot to try and put charge into her as I initially thought the issue lied in the battery/alternator not the starter motor. I'm happy to pop a relay in her, just wondering how do I wire her up? and I'm to use a standard horn style relay correct?

Dude, I would put money on the fact that your grounds are rooted. I had the same problem and it was fixed by getting some seriously fat cable and some big lugs for the end of it and making a lead which goes from negative battery terminal to the body. Also one from the engine block to the chassis, under the same bolt as the the battery ground. Redo the big starter cable too from the positive terminal of the battery to the starter motor. Also, inspect all the old cables as you remove them and look for spots that look like little tiny welds. This is where the electrical current has tried to and been intermittently permitted to flow and sparked and whatnot. The click without turning over is the dead giveaway. Check the voltage through the trigger wire on the starter. If you have bad grounds then this will be reading quite low. You probly need 9-10 volts here to turn over.

 

Incidentally, while your doing all this electrical stuff, you should replace the ignition contacts. You only need a starter relay if you can't get the car started with the lights on. Good luck.

 

PS your alternator regulator is rooted. 19v is massive across the terminals while running.

Fantastic! just what I was looking for! ok well i'll definitely hop to it! just one thing, the 19v is not while running so does this make a difference?

I think you better check the battery elecrolite level if that system is charging that much the battery would boil dry and the plates will warp without electrolite.

maybe you could test/ compair your multi meter with a friends or replace the battery on the meter.

repair charging circuit to charge between 13.8v to 14.2volt any more it will kill batterys.

1) shes got water, and always has

2) the multimeter i have is a bit suspect, will definately try it with another

3) repair charging circuit? how do I do that? just the wires that go from the alternator to the battery or the alternator as well?
