lil_mike Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 hi guys, just bought a KE55 coupe the other week and its starting to have some engine problems. The engine is a 4K-C with a Fiat Webber on it and everything else standard. It has some trouble starting up, especially when cold. On my way to work this morning it had a distinct lack of power. as in, it struggled to get past 60kph in third. It free revs fine, but under load it coughs and splutters, sounds like its misfiring. some times it runs ok. but this only lasts for about 20 seconds, then it goes back to the coughing. It was running fine just a few days ago, but has started doing this more and more lately. any help would be appreciated guys, Thanks, Mike Quote
styler Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 check plugs, points and fuel filter for a start Quote
lil_mike Posted October 29, 2007 Author Report Posted October 29, 2007 the plugs seem fine, just have a small amount of oil on them, they arent black though. Checked the dizzy, and all the contacts are worn away pretty bad. they have small recesses in them and white powder forming in them. same can be said about the arm. would this cause it? Quote
styler Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 (edited) get new cap, rotor, plugs and points. when installing points make sure the dwell is correct with dwell meter (ie gap) then do your ignition timing after. remember also to gap the spark plugs correctly with feeler gauges or spark plug gap tool then install handtight and 1/3 turn with a tool. lil_mike Posted October 31, 2007 Author Report Posted October 31, 2007 ok, replaced dizzy and rotor button. runs better now. do i need to adjust the timing at all? if so how? Quote
tas_ae71 Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 it maybe that the carb is not jetted correctly and its way over rich... advancing the timing will help this to some extent. was it like this when you took it for a test drive? it doesnt hurt to replace the things mentioned, they are just basic maintenance anyway. lil_mike Posted October 31, 2007 Author Report Posted October 31, 2007 it ran pretty good, and then just got a little worse gradually. runs good now, no power loss, lots of torque :P well for a 1.3 anyway. i know i need to get the air/fuel ratio adjusted as well. Quote
tas_ae71 Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 what did you do to make it run better or did it just magically fix its self..? it sounds like a fouled plug.. if its got the std exhaust, you may not even notice that its running on 3 cylinders.. Quote

tas_ae71 Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 dunno, check the manual if it has one.. would have the gap to set the plugs to. my 4ac kept on fouling plugs, i had to upgrade my whole ignition to fix it.. don't have too many dramas with it now.. Quote
basher_ke20 Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 should be w16exru11 in denso thanks chris Quote
lil_mike Posted November 5, 2007 Author Report Posted November 5, 2007 hmmmm, it did it again the other night. was only upon start up. coughed and struggled to get to idle speed even with my foot flat? gave it a good rev quickly and heard a loud popping noise. ran fine after that, but its ticking loudly instead now? Could be the choke flap sticking, hence the pop noise when you revved it, could have been the flap snapping back into place... Quote
