DR1FT Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 hey, sometimes my 55 will start first time, but some other times it just simply clicks and then nothing, ive heard if u run a relay or something it will never happen again, is this true? If so, how do i do this, i can't seem to fine a good explanation of it. Cheers Josh Quote
thomo Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 you run 12 volt of battery, through relay, to starter motor, the power that used to activate solinoid instead activates relay, it makes sure starter gets good volts, relays arnt that fussy, they can trip as low as 8 volt but on a rolla that usualy means your starter is on the way out, relay probably wont fix anything, but for $3 why not have a go Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 I dare say its not a relay. Run some grounds in the car. Or find the old ones, remove the bolts at either end and check for a spot weld looking mark under each one. This mark will indicate that the ground is loose and the current has to arc from point to point. Give them a really good sand with wet and dry then clean with metho and bolt them back together. Also, check the lead from the starter to the battery, they quite often crack and fray the insulation off and need to be replaced. Do not get a new starter if you havent tried these fixes. You could even run a new ground from the block to the point on the body where the battery grounds. You only need a starter relay if you cannot start the car with the lights and stereo on. Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 I dunno about anyone else on here, but after driving corollas with K engines for the last 10 years, and having had probably 15 of them actually on the road over that time....THE STARTER MOTORS ARE SHIT!!! They wear out, and if it just clicks...try hitting it with a hammer, and then it will probably go again, as Thomo said, it's more than likely on it's way out, given that it's a corolla...I've never had an earth issue cause this problem in any of mine? I have had this exact issue many many times, changed the starter and nothing else, and it has fixed the problem...I'd try find a spare starter and swap them, and see if this solves the problem...if it does, buy a new one :) Quote
