hi everyone,

I'm looking into getting an engine conversion done to my 1991 toyota corolla hatch, currently has a 4afe engine in it. anyways to cut long story short, I'm looking at getting a 4age silver top or maybe a black top if not too much price difference. which engine would you people think is better and what kind of price would i be looking at? also any recommended places in brisbane for this kind of half cut?

haha just incase u all think I'm lazy :y: i havnt been :hmm:

i called a few place in brissy today and was given a price of approx. $2400 for a silvertop halfcut. just want to know if this price is about right because ive read on this forum other people doing what I'm doing and getting silver top half cuts for about $1400.

any help is appreciated. thanks :y:

a blacktop is a big price increase for a very small peformance increase. Bang for buck a silvertop is a great upgrade, just my opinion though.

Yeah I see your point but in the grand scheme of things the blacktop is worth the extra few hundred in my opinion. Go and see Danny at BMI, Rocklea, he gets many silvertops, blacktops, and tons of half cuts. He can source you one if he doesn't have it in stock, as can any importer. I paid $1250 for a blacktop engine with full intake, headers, alternator, starter, half the loom, and flywheel and clutch. 800 for a silvertop with the same. They had a 20valve halfcut last time I was there one month ago.

well yeah it all depends on what you can get. I have seen a complete silvertop package before for $1000 and the closest is $1800 or so for a blacktop. Thats a lot to pay for an unmodified 2kw (real world)

Once you've had your first Blacktop, you have a big set of quads, the lightest factory flywheel, and a head with more lift that you can use on a silvertop bottom end, which people believe to be stronger anyhow. Sounds like a nice combo to me. Not to mention you get to recoupe cash spent on the second motor by parting out the head, quads and flywheel that you do not need from it. If you add it up thats 5-6 hundred back on every motor you buy! Its like a 200 dollar rebuild.

if the flywheel comes with the deal and the price is not that different then yes you do have a very valid point I should of thought of myself as they are seriously hard to come by. Speaking of which that very much looks like one in your avatar.

I don't think the throttles mean much as even the silvertops are good for around 220hp by my research (beats me why toyota upsized them), and the only cam difference is that the blacktop has an extra 0.2mm of intake lift and thats it.

The silvertop bottom end is better in some regards but its normally not worth swapping the whole bottom end for it. The only thing strong is the silvertop has some seriously chucky con-rods unlike the blacktop twig like ones. The only other sticking point is the unreliable timing belt tensioner of the blacktop, to convert this to the simple silvertop one the whole tensioning mechinism and oil pump need to be changed, once done though a cheap and common silvertop timing belt (lada samara belt - Gates T811) can be used on both.
