hey guys i found an interest in old school corollas for nearly 3 years now finally turning 18 and i found a ke35 or ke55 coupe not sure which one it is. I'm really interested in buying it got a deposite on it atm. only thing stopping me from a cruise is my old man! he loves the ke35 coupes but he says its not safe being a rwd & having drum brakes. the car runs not that overrated but good enough for a daily. how can i convince him? any ideas ?

I've heard on conversions done swapping the whole diff assembly from falcon's and hilux's. The they need to be modified and shortened. So with a little work you can have dish brakes if it really is that important.

what the cost for a decent disk-brake conversion?

Its probably more dangerous doing a brake conversion than leaving it stock. I've never had the standard drums give me grief or fail to pull me up in time.

just tell him it will be heaps drift :P

Yea that will help convince him its safe

4 wheel drum brakes with a power booster will give better braking than disc's. It is simple greater surface area. Drum brakes are used for heavy trucks that do need to pull up 25 ton.

Well that explains why 75+ tonne dumpies use disk brakes...

Really its because its easier to make the same air/spring powered drum brakes they've been making for years than converting to a air over hydraulic setup like mining trucks. Most high end trucks are now using disks too (Merc for example).

Drums are fine. If you need to alleviate your old mans fears, take the car to a brake shop, have the drums reshod and perhaps new wheel cylinders, and have them adjust them up correctly.

my 2 cents

Drum brakes are fine the only problem they have is fade. So just be a bit careful if you do any twisty roads that you use some engine braking as well and aren't throwing the anchors on all the time. Having said that a new car does brake a hell of a lot better than an old rolla, just something you have to get used to.
