RWannabe Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Hi All, I own a 1989 Holden Nova with the 4AFC engine. Yes, I realise it's not a corolla but I figure it's only a few badges and some glue away from it so... Are you willing to help out a poor rolla wannabe? I was recently driving along, not a care in the world, when all of a sudden the engine completely died. I got the car towed home and sure enough, the timing belt was gone. So my question is this, is the 4AFC an interference or a non-interference engine? In other words, will I just have to replace the belt or is it a head off job? Thanks guys! Quote
Sam_Q Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 I havent heard for sure but I know of a case of where this model of engine has broken a belt and it was fine. Also I have seen the shape of the pistons and cylender head and I would say there should be a heap of clearence there Quote
towe001 Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 (edited) Non-interference And as far as i know the 20v is the only interference head/block Edited September 1, 2008 by towe001 Quote
Sam_Q Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 neither 20v is meant to be either however I have doubts about the blacktop, i will find out for myself soon anyway with my own testing Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 From what I've read all A-series engines are non-interference, as long as you stay with stock rods, pistons and cam timings. Quote
RWannabe Posted September 2, 2008 Author Report Posted September 2, 2008 Thanks guy, that's great news. I'm new to these engines so is there anything else I should be changing when i do the belt? The engine's done about 300,000km. Quote

The engine's done about 300,000km. Might as well do all the other belts at the same time, plus water pump and crank seal if you're really into it. Quote
RWannabe Posted September 9, 2008 Author Report Posted September 9, 2008 I had the cam cover off while I was doing the timing belt. When I was putting it back on I over torqued the left most acorn nut and snapped off the top part that the acorn nut screwed on to. I'm assuming the long metal rod unscrews from the head but where would I find another one? Quote
