Mybowlcut Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 (edited) Hey. I'm sick of the stock air filter on my 70. It's a hassle to get on and off, especially with the catch can... so I was thinking about getting a K&N. I'm interested to know what these are like once fitted. Which leads me to my next question... my car gets hot quite easily in the hot weather (usually sits at exactly half but can go a bit above 3/4 in the afternoon up a hill). I was considering going down the thermo fan route but I'm curious if it's something to do with my thermostat or a flow problem with the radiator... the thermostat was replaced a couple of months ago, so I don't think it's that. So, my other question is, is there any kind of test to make sure the coolant is getting to all the places it should be? I know it's a stupid question but I want to make sure that the factory cooling is working before slapping on a thermo. Edit: Also, what kind of rate of coolant loss is normal for these cars? Cheers. Falken_KE30 Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 (edited) Ive owned my Ksev about 8 weeks? havent used a drop of oil or coolant. and temp never hits fist notch (1/4 mark) Maybe try draining the coolant, unattach the radiator hoses, flush radiator, and flush the block out? Ive also heard of a bottle of stuff that flushes out the block. you drain all coolant, put in the bottle of stuff, run engine for 1 min, then flush it with a hose.. Mums BF uses it on his bikes. towe001 Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 From what i know the temp should be around the half mark Go to a radiator specialist and get it reversed flushed and watch the amount of crap get flushed out. And on that note whats the radiator like ? Quote
rob83ke70 Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 I'd suggest that you take the radiator out and get it professionally cleaned out by a good radiator repair person. My old ke70 used to sit around 1/4, but if you left it idling in 40 degree heat it would come up a bit over half. flogging it along the road at 110km/hr with four or five people in it and heavily loaded with eskies and booze also got the temperature up a bit too. If you put a thermo fan on it, get a shroud made. it will make more of a difference than anything else you do. But get the radiator cleaned out first. To drain the coolant from the block, there should be a drain plug on the front of the engine down near the alternator on the block, this will drain the coolant out of the block thoroughly. oh and with your air intake, I think you should find a snorkel attachment out of a km20 liteace or km36 litace fitted with the K engine, and bolt that on top of your carburettor, then mount a small remote air filter probably out of another toyota such as a hilux maybe, somewhere in your engine bay and make it suck cold air from inside a guard or similar. This will actually make your car gain a little bit of power. A little bit.... if you put a sports filter with open sides on your standard carburettor it will suck hot air and lose a little bit of power. sound cooler, and look cooler, but will not go quite as well... Robert. Quote

Must be a pretty overrated ke70! Flushing the block out sounds good... And on that note whats the radiator like ? Radiator is brand new bought it more recently than the thermo. :) What is a reverse flush? I flushed it when I got the new radiator but I'm thinking I should just pay to get it done properly. Robert. Thanks for the advice about the shroud, I've read that a bit around here and other forums. Hmm... so if you're saying suck cold air by means of extending the reach of the air filter, could I somehow slap a pod at the end of it? I've thought about doing it but I'm unsure how the piping would attach to the Aisin carby... Cheers. Quote
rob83ke70 Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 you can get a snorkel type attachment off another toyota, probably a van. I'd leave some sort of standard enclosed air filter on it, one off another toyota would be ok, and put the intake to the filter somewhere where it will get cold air. The best thing about this is that if everything says toyota on it and it takes standard filters/parts, it starts to become really trippy looking under the bonnet.... make it look factory, and see how many people you confuse... If you put a pod on it, it needs to be securely mounted or else it is a defect. By the very nature of a pod, it will be hard to get it to suck air that is not hot from the engine bay.... put it in the guard maybe like a wrx thats been modified properly? if the radiator is brand new and the thermostat is brand new, then you may have a dicky temp sender, would be worth measuring the temperature and working out if it is hot or if its just the gauge. The main issue though, was with the fact that the standard air filter is a hassle to get on and off. If I was going to go with your suggestion, I could just use the air filter I have now, right? I'm guessing the snorkel doesn't get bigger between models. I hope it's not the temp sender because that was bought around the same time as the thermostat. How would I determine if it is actually hot? What kind of temperature would I be looking for? Cheers. Quote
trav_555 Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 (edited) EDIT: a 5k stock air intake plenum thingo with a pod is shit easy to get off + noise!! makeing sure your coolant isnt going to places it shouldnt, ie block? had this problem when i got my car, blew head gasket a few months later cheers Travis Edited December 27, 2008 by trav_555 Quote
towe001 Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 What is a reverse flush? I flushed it when I got the new radiator but I'm thinking I should just pay to get it done properly. Reverse flush is where the coolant system is flushed in the reverse way it normally travels. So if the coolant goes from top to bottom through the motor a reverse flush will be from bottom to top. Can always do it by using a hose hooked up to the tap but its a lot better to have the water forced through by compressed air or something. Quote
rob83ke70 Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 if you get an infrared thermometer and check the temperature of the radiator top and bottom hose, the top should be around the temp of the thermostat and the bottom should be up to 20 degrees cooler. If that is the case when the temp gauge is reading funny don't stress too much about it. if you go with the plenum of the liteace, you will need another air filter to fit the pipe and it probably won't be any easier to get it on or off. 666westy999 Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 assuming u have the correct thermostat and ur radiator isnt all rusty and/or corroded; just take your pipes off your radiator, take out the radiator, crank up the hose and squirt water through the openings. make sure u got most the shit out of your pipes too. chuk the radiator back in, connect your hoses up again. get mukowt by tectaloy, instructions are on package. then use correct coolant... this info however is just based on previous problems i have had personally. your problem may be completely different and not relevent to what ive just mentioned (although this is good practice to keep things clean)... hope ya get it sorted mate westy Quote
