Car Not Starting After Driving For 20 Mins

Hey everyone i have a shitty ra40 celica with an 18ru engine

2 litre carby thing

 

anyway i can start it and drive it for a while and then when i turn it off i wont be able to start it again, it will not have spark from the coil for about half an hour and then i can start it.

 

keeping in mind the timing chain is on its way out and ive never checked the timing/points

 

probs something i should do

any advice?

So it still turns over, just won't spark?

 

Does it actually have points? or is it electronic with an ignitor?

I remember a Dirty Wheels article from Wheels years ago where a Falcon had a similar problem, would run fine when cold but after it warmed up it would start running rough....turned out a hair-line crack in the dizzy cap was opening up when hot and causing a cylinder to drop out, maybe a similar thing is happening with you except it is the coil lead, although you'd expect it to cut out first.

i would check your ignition coil 1st.

+1 for checking the coil. They do shit themselves, so it might not like starting while she's still hot (perhaps reduced voltage through the coil when cranking?)
