Hey All,

I am a newbie here. Just come over from datsun1200.com. I have just purchased a T18. L3T, T20. I was wandering what if any motor swap outs(non turbo) can be made easily. I was just toying with the idea of a few more ponies than the stock 1800cc unit or may be some easy mods to the stock unit. This is the first Toyota that I have ever owned that wasn't covered by a service and warranty plan. My daily is a 2008 Aurion SV6. Plain Jane white sportivo package that goes like a rat up a drainpipe. Sure as hell give the lads in their XR6's and SS's a bit of a hurry up :) . Back to my new project- I will be looking for some alloy rims ex factory preferred plus some trim bits ect. I suppose my bigest question is, Do I need to know about any nasty habits the old girl my have or devlope that will cause me any pain, suffering or sleepless nights.

Any and all information will be greatly appeciated.

Cheers,

Peter.

Will post a pic asap so you my see what I am up against ;)

Glad to see another member of the T18 fraternity. I hope during your ownership you'll learn that she sure does deserve the name of the "Poor man's AE86".

Power wise, any of the T series engines or combination of engines will be a bolt in affair. can swap for a 2TG as a straight bolt in, or, if you wish to keep the more torquey 1.8 capacity, it's entirely possible to fit either a 2TG head to the three T block, or, depending on the block, a 3T crank into a 2TG engine.

Both of these combinations give some really sweet results. Couple this with the EFI of a 2TGEU and you're onto a winner. Bare in mind, the earlier cams in the 2TGs are much more agressive, so early cams in a late head on a 1.8L block with EFI holds tremendous potential.

Also, sprinter running gear, as in RWD 4AGE, will bolt straight in. You have to use the 22 spline T50 box behind it. Other than that, it requires no modification to the crossmember or anything.

The 3TC can be made to put out quite a substantial amount more than it came from the factory with. The key (as with most toyota engines) is letting them breathe easy. A set of side draught webers and extractors will make a huge difference, as will a nice bump stick. Emmission controls should be removed straight away.

As far as bad habits go, just make sure she's oiled up sensibly. I have had oil pumps chew themselves out reasonably quick mostly due to my absentmindedness. Other than that, they are strong incredibly reliable engines. I have taken one for a 500km road trip, on which i split the radiator and boiled it dry. After stopping for quick topups only about 6 times, she made it there and back again. Once the radiator was fixed, she hasn't given me another problem and hasn't missed a beat. They are fantastic engines and respond excellently to performance work.

Another one I had had a downdraught weber and pretty aggressive cam, which while it was interesting to drive, delivering all it's power in one heft at about 4000rpm, it was a absolute beast once in the powerband.

Other mods available is pretty much anything that can be done to an AE86. Just remember that when ordering parts, tell them it's for either an AE71 or a KE70 to avoid Takumi tax.

There are some slight differences with the strut tops between models, but they are easily interchangable, so that's not much of an issue. Rack and Pinion steering is also possible if you can either find an AE71 crossmember or weld on the rack mounts from a KE70. The steering shaft also has to be modified, but that's mostly a case of swapping the lower section of the column, so nothing overly traumatic.

If you do decide to go for a turbo motor, either find a 3TGTE or turbo a 4AGZE for lots of fun in the sun. If you need any further info or looking for any specific parts just pm and i'll be happy to lend a hand.

Worth mentioning that a 3tgte turbo manifold will also bolt straight onto any other T series motor.

Peurto Rican's also do some crazy stuff with T series motors running T04 turbos (or bigger) making 400+hp and running 8 second 1/4 miles......

I'm jealous, I drool over t18's.... We have a small collection of ke corollas and probably too small of a budget for most of the cool stuff you read about on the internet.

Without having much experience, so don't put as much weight on my opinion as other guys who know more, I'd go with the 3t block, late 2tg head, and reprofiled camshafts, side draught carburettors and extractors.... I'm drooling again all over the keyboard...

This is solid advice here... for a N/A 3T, it'd have to be what I'd consider the best setup. One thing to keep in mind though... If you can find them, use a late model 2TG head, but put the early model 2TG cams in it... They have a much more agressive grind than the later ones (pre-emissions control vs post emissions).

That setup with a set of high compression pistons and you'll be really cooking.

But it all depends on how much you want to spend, and what you want to get out of the car.
