KaiShin Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 (edited) Hey Guys, Started having some major drama's with my KE30 today... Now I will admit I have next to no knowledge when it comes to automatic gearboxes... I was driving along today home from work... Started the car and drove off as per normal... All of a sudden I took off from some lights, the car goes to shift gear an the car starts to free rev? I pulled over as this was rather odd... Couldn't find anything wrong visually... So off I went again , car shifted normally and I thought all was well. However... next set of lights... took off fine, car goes to shift gear and again free revving... Basically, after pulling over and trying to find the solution, the car will now no longer shift from first gear... So I was forced to drive 20k/hour all the way home with the gearbox in the L position. (25klms drive lol) Does anyone have a solution to my problem? Basically... I am close to converting the KE to 20v Silvertop, but don't quite have enough funds... I would prefer this not cost me a huge amount of money to fix as it will just be sucking my conversion fund :jamie: Cheers in advance. Kel Edited February 3, 2010 by KaiShin Quote
Evan G Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 (edited) same thing happens to my 4k trumatic, i found the easiest solution in the world don't take your foot off the accelerator! if i feel like my auto is gonna slip i keep my foot flat, screaming its tits off until 60kph then changes very tightly say you take off at the lights with 80% throttle then back off just before you change gear thats when it slips? also try pumping the throttle when its slipping this also helps, ive adjust bands in my auto, didnt make a difference its the clutch packs Edited February 2, 2010 by Evan G Quote
KaiShin Posted February 2, 2010 Author Report Posted February 2, 2010 I did try that on the way home... it just keeps revving and revving... Maybe I was just scared to leave it rev out... (I do baby the thing) Quote
Evan G Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 this happend to me by accident when i had enough of the auto slipping! wait, so when you take off at the lights its free revving or it finds 1st? try keep your pedal steady 80% down all the way to 50kph don't release it when shifting between 1st to 2nd just pump the pedal if it free revs http://holdenpaedia.oldholden.com/index.php/Trimatic_Faults have a read through there Quote
Evan G Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 (edited) double post, also have you check your transmission level? Edited February 2, 2010 by Evan G Quote
Bamboo Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 crazy thought. check the tranny fluid Quote
KaiShin Posted February 2, 2010 Author Report Posted February 2, 2010 (edited) Yeah it finds 1st with no problems at all... Just drives like normal until it trys to find second. Never even gave fluid a thought... Does the auto box have a viewing window on it? Edited February 2, 2010 by KaiShin Quote
jono1986 Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 It has a dipstick, mine was on the left side of the engine close to the fire wall (looking at the car from the front) Quote
Bamboo Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 Nah, try the dipstick. Your Auto may by shattered but I've seen many an experienced man forget the fluid. The dipstick should tell you what it wants, ie hot running etc. i haven't seen one for a while and can't tell you off the top of my head. others here should know Quote
Evan G Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 (edited) make sure you check the fluid level when hot and engine at idle, dipstick is near the back of the engine on the drivers side, dextron 3 is the auto trans fluid name check the auto cooler lines near the front right caster rod arent leaking ALSO! try shifting from L to H under full throttle at 30 - 40kph it should shift very quickly get back to me with the results bambo - ive seen a technican at work start a car with no oil and let it idle for 10mins until he asked me "geez sounds a bit rattly" (someone drained the oil and was sick the rest of the week and didnt tell him squat of what was done!) Easy Evan LMAO. Had a very experienced mate with a dunnydoor trimatic. Was convinced it was uked. then he checked the fluid.... Quote
KaiShin Posted February 2, 2010 Author Report Posted February 2, 2010 Thanks for the tips guys! just checled the fluid level. Its just under the full mark by about... 2mm Now it did want a hot reading, the car has been off doe about an hour... so I would still say warm... Quote
KaiShin Posted February 2, 2010 Author Report Posted February 2, 2010 ok sorry just read the other replys... Ill go round the block a few times then leave the car on idle and re-checl the level... Be back with results in a few minutes :jamie: Quote
Bamboo Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 next check is to wipe the fluid on the back of your hand. is it red or black? red is good. then smell the fluid. does it smell burnt? I know it sounds weird, but need to know this stuff!!! Quote
KaiShin Posted February 2, 2010 Author Report Posted February 2, 2010 OK went for a drive... did the dipstick at idle after... And now I feel like an idiot... The fluid only just registered on the dipstick... so I think its fluid level... The fluid was red on the first reading... and I did notice a slight burnt smell... When I kept the throttle down on the drive around it did keep the car going... but definentaly still kept the revs right up in the rev range and not full acceleration. Quote
