i am tossing up between a 20v or a 16v i want a engine that will last i have heard that the 20v has a few problems with it

 

also the 16v has more parts i want the engine to last and be tough

 

what engine should i go with

I wouldn't say the 20v has any "problems" as such.

They (as far as I know) have an interference type head, this can be a disaster if the timing belt breaks.

They also rev their tits off, with a red line set further up the range. So possible more wear and tear.

But proper maintenance and serving, and there wont be any problems.

 

The 16v doesn't have these problems. If the timing belt breaks, bummer. replace it and go again.

Parts are plentiful & the 4age engines are known for their reliability.

The 16v seem to be cheaper too.

I don't know what your budget is but put the 16 valve in with an aftermarket computer (ems, haltech or something) and then if you don't like it sell the 16valve and upgrade.

The 20Vs are a great motor. Aren't any huge powerhouse in an AE95 as the 4WD saps a bit and they don't have much torque. Once you get some revs into it though they are a fun little engine.

 

It all comes down to cost really. You should be able to find a v.cheap local 4AGE complete for less than $500 if you know where to look. 20Vs with everything you need to run them are getting up more towards the $1000 mark. I got my AE101 halfcut for $1250 which was a really good price. Before that I was watching them go for up to $2.5K

 

I wouldn't waste my time putting a big/smallport 4AGE in an AE95. They're a common motor and not that much of a step up over the stock 4AFE. 20V/GZE are your best two options and GZEs are pricey and hard to find.

i can get a 4age 20v or a 16v 4age bigport i would prefer bigport i want to tinker and learn on the engine and there isnt much you can do with a 20v

 

i love the sound of the 16v and when all the loom ecu etc is in the car if the 4age goes i can swap it easily for much cheaper than the 20v

 

I am going to be offroading etc i want something that can take a little bit of a beating it would kill my pocket if the 20v blew

 

Even tho the 16v is alot more work to put in the car i think i will get a 16v over the 20v

From what you've said there then the 16v is your best choice but you don't know what you're talking about if you prefer the 16v sound over the sound of a 20vs quads on song. :D

4AGEs (either 16v or 20v) will be _hopeless_ for off-roading, you need low-down torque for that and all the GEs are high-revving torqueless wonders. If you put a 7AFE dyno chart next to a bigport 16v (both put out the same power) you will see that the 7A has a MUCH better bottom end, often 10kw higher until peak power.

 

A GZE would help rectify that, but you seem set on either a bigport or a 20v, in which case I'd recommend staying with the 4AFE.

i would love to go 4agze but thats not an option i am not going serious full time offroading just some country roads the beach and rarely off road up hills as long as it will climb without reving to hell and back??

For not serious 4WDing i reckon a 16v would be fine, a 20v less so and also more expensive.

 

If you're serious about putting a new engine in your car it's probably a good idea to research what's involved in the conversion before making any decisions at all.

I'm pretty sure there's no straight swap you can do and everything's going to take some work so research and decide.
