Oyabun Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 (edited) New to the forums and to Toyotas. I recently aquired a 1986 Ae82 5 door for 100 bucks. The beast runs and drives, but its an automatic. A few days ago I got an FX16 parts car complete with a manual trans, pedals and all, Also for 100 bucks. Ill be doing a manual swap shortly. I just have a few more questions as I want to get everything off of this car that I possibly can before junking it. I have read that the front struts can swap directly over? Can anyone verify this? I also would like to know if the rear strut assembly can swap over as well as I would really like the rear swaybar and rear disc setup. Does anyone know exactly what needs to swap over? It maybe easier to just swap the whole rear strut assembly with the hubs and all attatched if possible. My parts car has good shocks and Id like to swap them over as well. I plan on doing a blacktop swap later on so I guess I should save the fuel tank and pump.. Am I missing anything I should save? Any information and insight would be really appreciated. Thanks guys. Edit: Forgot to mention I was told the motor has a bad headgasket. It has already been torn down and missing a few things. I don't think Ill be swapping the 16v in. philbey Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 Just going out on a limb here mate, but what's an FX16? As you're from the US there's a fair chance we didn't get and FX16 here. At least I've not heard of one anyway. If we can work out what they are or what our local version is then we'll be a bit more help. Quote

Its a 2 door hatch with a 1.6 4AGE. AE82 chassis. Picture attached. From what I have read it looks like AUS didnt get the fx16, but hopefully theres an equivalent. It was only released up here for 2 years I think, and there is not much aftermarket or information on them that I have found. This would be a US FX16 GTS Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Aus didn't get the FXs, which were all three-doors, however there have been some imported. Best place to go would be the AE82 Owners Club (http://www.ae82.net), there's a whole heap of AE82 owners there (including me) as well as several people with FXGTs, and quite a few gurus. Quote
parrot Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Everything will swap across. Sometimes there is some fiddling with the driveshaft couplings, so swap the entire engine front end across as a unit. Swap across the entire wiring loom. Engine bay and dash. The intank fuel pump will bolt into you existing tank, but swap across the fuel/brake lines and brake proportioning valve as a unit to match the disc rears and give you the larger diameter fuel line. Oyabun Posted April 26, 2010 Author Report Posted April 26, 2010 Thanks for the help guys. I also have a post on the AE82 owners forum, but this one seems a bit more active. My running car is carbed and the FX is injected. I should have mentioned that, and from what I understand the whole tank should be swapped. Am I wrong? The donor car was also used as a offroad racecar of some sort, so the interior is gutted and the dash is not in the best of shape. Since they are both AE82 chassis I am assuming at this point the suspension will swap. I know the fronts have a 4 stud top and mine has a 3, but theres a plastic plug where a 4th would be. The rear struts look different however, the brake lines are not in the same location I know that. I don't have them side by side so I have to go by memory. If the rear control arms are the same then the rear swaybar should bolt in as well, I am hoping. Ill be doing what I can this week, so Ill see how it goes and come back and confirm any fitment issues. I am getting really into this car. I'm a Volvo guy, just finished my wagon up and moving on to this. My Volvo has been parked since I got this corolla and I havent missed it yet  Thanks for the insights guys, this forum is great. Quote
parrot Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Take the pump out of the injected tank and the fuel pickup out of the carb tank. If the injected tank is baffled, use that. You're correct about the front struts Quote

You're correct about the front struts Will do for sure on the fuel tank. Do you know about the rear struts? On both cars they are 3 stud but as I said, I didnt look close enough as the cars are not side by side. Edit: After a while of searching on google I found this site : http://webspace.webring.com/people/va/ae82power/ae82sus.html Apparently front and rears are interchangeable. Rears may need a bit of modifying. Edited April 26, 2010 by Oyabun Quote
parrot Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 I have previously installed rear suspension / brakes from an AE82 twincam into a 5 door carb AE82 (as part of front cut twin cam swap into an AE82 carb car)and they were a direct swap. Essentially you should swap every component from one car to the other! Quote

Essentially you should swap every component from one car to the other! Excellent, glad to see someone has done it for sure. So to be certain, the entire rear suspension needs to be swapped over? struts, swaybar, hubs, lines, and control arms? Sorry to ask so many specific questions. I need to know what to take off since the car is about 20 miles away from where the actual work will be done as there is no room where the car is stored to house 2 cars. I need to know what I will need to take for certain so I wont have everything apart and realize i needed something else. Thanks for your help, you seem to have done everything I plan on doing! Quote
7shades Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Pics of Volvo... 2 x 240's and a 745 here  Quote
parrot Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Yes to all that, although I didn't need to swap the lower arms. But if you have them, my as well take the lot. Quote
Oyabun Posted April 26, 2010 Author Report Posted April 26, 2010 Thanks for confirming parrot! 7shades, I have a 98 V70 T5 manual trans. Dyno was 239.5 Wheel HP, 330 wheel torque. I believe I have an old pic around... Quote
philbey Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Glad we could help man. At risk of going off topic, is there a video of this volvo lighting up the wheels on the road at speed? Filmed from another car driving along side it? Quote

Filmed from another car driving along side it? I think a friend of mine had his passenger film when I ran against his bolt on 350z. It was dark and can't see much. I walked him in 5th  Hopefully I get this rolla project going. I would really like something faster now. Still can't decide on a blacktop or a GZE! don't plenty of research and reading so far, but that swap is about a year away anyways. Thanks again all for the info! I will let you guys know how it all goes, and possibly with pics for those doing this in the future. Quote
