Felix Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 not a bad score considering what you salvaged. :D at least it will be treated nicely now. is it in your little sports car? must fly. Quote
Clown Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 is there any chance someone could send me a copy dyno2000? Quote
ikon_idol Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 The 7k I'm building is finished only to the short block stage. Its on the back burner for a while. I've recently finished a 5k engine build to replace the one in my sports car. That engine is going in first, lots of work has gone into that one. I never planed on building a 7k but this one come up by chance after I was well into the 5k rebuild. I didn't need it but you know what its like. The car is very light, about 580kg, so it should fly. SLOTH Snr Posted September 19, 2005 Author Report Posted September 19, 2005 Jamie got it spot on when he said the valves were a restriction. Oh for a DOHC 16v Kmotor. Nice to dream :) Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 19, 2005 Report Posted September 19, 2005 you'll probably like this then sloth http://public.fotki.com/superjamie/cars/library/3k-r/ Quote
Sloth Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 Yeah i think i have seen that engine before... As long as the car is running eventually it will all be worth it. It's a shame that the engine packed in when it did, we had just got the new fuel line in and working and dad had just put most of the undercar neons on  Oh well, it will be a beast when we finish. Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 you could always go back to the stock engine and just talk about the phat motor you're building for the next 9 months like i did  at least you can drive the thing and partially enjoy the fruits of your labour, and play with the suspension Quote
Sloth Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 Yeah thats probably what we will do, only problem is once we got the 7K in, we got rid of the 4K cause we didn't have the room to keep it  So now we just wanna find a shitty 3,4 or 5k cheap and put that in, we will be able to hook up the extractors, and twin SU's, so it won't be a bad ride anyway  Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 you should be able to find one cheap. there have been several giveaway 3k/4ks in the last 6 months, someone even got a free 5k! Quote
SLOTH Snr Posted September 21, 2005 Author Report Posted September 21, 2005 Okay, so after playing with dyno i accept that a 7k is like an athlete with asthma. It now goes into the six month rebuild stage. If that is going to happen i will have to consider an inhaler for the asthmatic ( supercharge or turbo) But for the moment i'm just looking for a replacement 4k Quote
Felix Posted September 21, 2005 Report Posted September 21, 2005 a 7k may not develop overly much HP wise, without spending a few $. it is the torque, and unstressed power delivery which is where it wins hands down. just build to maximise torque over as wide a power band as you can. peak HP isn't the be all and end all. it is the area under the curve that makes a quick engine. Quote
SLOTH Snr Posted September 22, 2005 Author Report Posted September 22, 2005 That was my origanal thought's Craig wants quick it doesn't have to be fast. Thats why i went the high torque option. I've gotta stop looking at the 4ag's and formula atlantics on line and get back on track. A good strong 7k,an R31 diff conversion i thought would make a good fun set up. Just going to take longer than planned. Bet that doesn't happen to eveyone else;sic Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 don't waste time with the r31, the diffs are cheap but they suck. get a real lsd like a toyota T series (celica, ae86) or G series (hilux) Quote
ancullen Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 Umm, I thought the LSD available in the R31 was the one also available in the VL Commodore. In which case it's meant to be a very good diff, with different ratios available to it, and a rather high power tolerance. Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 nah, borg warner is cheap but f@$ks up alot Quote
