Reddog Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Can anyone help me with how to fit an after market tacho to my AE92 Rolla? I got it on ebay and the instructions where vague as. I asked my old man and he said where's the coil in the old days you just used to connect the electric tacho to either side of the coil and your dash lights for night time. I am a first time noob so go easy. Quote
Teddy Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Another Option would be to get a tacho dash out of another Ae91 (or relating); swap over the appropriate bits, and walla ! a tacho. Usually when doing that, there isn't any wiring involved, as Toyota already integrated the tacho section into the loom, like alot of other "top of the line options" Gota love single to multiple line assemblies  Quote
Tiger Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Once I fit my tacho... I'll write up the tutorial... It'll be a temp throw -in job, but the theory will be there to learn off  Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 with any aftermarket tacho, there are usually 4 wires 12v Positive. you hook this up to an ignition-switched power source, such as the part of the stereo that comes on when you switch the key on 12v Negative. you earth this to the other part of the above power source, or just to any bare metal place on the firewall or dash 12v Lights. this goes to a psotive power source that comes on when you turn the headlights on. the little dash light is a good place to steal this power from Signal. hook this up to the negative side of the ignition coil. yes, the one in the engine bay. you'll need a big long wire. some tachos say to hook up to the positive of the ignition coil, i've never really found any difference, except that would probably stealing some of your ignition voltage (this is bad) wheras it wouldn't on the negative side colors vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. i've seen red, black, white, yellow, green, purple and orange tacho wires. that's more than 4 colors (out of 4 possible things it could be) so if you're unsure of what's what, contact whoever makes your tacho (look on google or in the phone book) and ask them, we more than likely won't know Quote
mumblezzz Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 What sort of tacho is it? From memory, mine is an autometer one I think and Red means power, black is earth, green is signal and white is illumination. Depending on how many cylinders you may have to join the orange coloured wires I think. Quote
mikeys toy[RL] Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 that's the way i've always seen it p.s. just be glad you spelled "tacho" correct Quote
Reddog Posted October 1, 2005 Author Report Posted October 1, 2005 thanks for all the help and advice. Just poked the green wire into wiring loom plug on the negative side of the distributor. Works like a dream! Quote
