Jono.C Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) G'day all I've seen it done with ke20 and 25 diff's where people use ke30 axles and brakes and shorten the ends to fit them into a ke2X diff. Will this work for a ke10? I want my ke10 diff a little stronger than it is now just to hold out until i get an r31 or the like diff shortened. Would the ke30 axles and centre in the ke10 be any stronger than factory? And more to the point, will they fit? Cheers - Jono Edited March 10, 2011 by Jono.C Quote
warrenfromtonny Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 hey as i can see it the axles would be no stronger. the reason for this is when the ends are machined down or cut to suit the width of the ke1X housing they heat up and become brittle. this brittleness at the ends at the diff centre, point of conact, is far from ideal. this is all given that they are not annealed or re treated after the modification. the only real advantage to having the axles is the pcd change (and possibly larger brakes, unsure???). personally i would save up and put the stronger 31 diff in if that was the path you were heading anyway, but if your not chasing power and just want to open up wheel options then a cut down set of ke3X (or late ke2X, so i hear???) banjo axles are the way to go. hope this helps Matt Quote
coln72 Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 don't know if they would fit in a KE10 housing, but from what I remember from my metalurgy degree, I'd doubt you would get enough heat into it to do any significant structural change to the axel to mak it brittle unless you got it red hot and stuck it into cold water...... warrenfromtonny Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 also GBC list the same bearing for all jap axles. so ke10 thru to ke70 should in theory be the same rear wheel bearing for the jap diff. but in saying that i've seen listings wrong before... Quote
camerondownunder88 Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Hi, Just going to share my thoughts on this. I know all Jap diff centres for the KE range of corolla from KE1X to KE70 are the same centre IF IT IS A JAP DIFF. So can pop in a later one like KE30 etc so maybe you get less wear and maybe 10 years of development made the cast a bit better but other wise no real gain. As for axles I know Jap diffs thin. Borg diffs thick. I THINK...have to double check this they are the same spline as I have always though in my head Jap centre Borg axles and we would be set :) But if axles are the same spline KE1X had borg diffs if they were AMI so save shortening them get some axles out of a Borg KE1X diff. Will be same length so wont get larger brakes but I know in my KE15 I def don't need larger rear brakes..LOL Cheers Cameron Quote
