malachiTE72 Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Hello I'm new to the forums with a couple of questions sorry i didnt introduce my self which i should have and the names mal. well i hope i could be of good use to fellow members.. so my question is what would i have to do for a 1st gen 3s rwd setup in my te72 i know i would need 2s mounts sump crossmember and bell housing. but i was planning on making my own mounts/ modifying the crossmember and fixing the sump and getting a bell house off ebay for w58 tranny which that i am going to run. so if there is any other info i would need to know please help me out and thank you for reading and responding... 19914afc Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 That sounds like its pretty much all you need, might need a stronger diff but if your keeping N/A should be fine. Quote
malachiTE72 Posted January 23, 2012 Author Report Posted January 23, 2012 what diff or rear end should i run? our local salvage has a te72 t18 in it even tho its not called a t18 here but i guess it has the T series rearend or do all te72's have that? Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 Don't want the 6-speed that fits the Altezza 3SGE?? The w58 is overkill isn't it, unless you're looking at Supra grunt. I'd get it up and running before worrying about the diff, you might find your stock one will be good for years. It really depends on how you drive. Quote

I'd get it up and running before worrying about the diff, you might find your stock one will be good for years. It really depends on how you drive. W-series isn't really overkill when you remember that they came out behind anaemic 18RCs (not the W58 though). I certainly wouldn't baulk at using one behind a BEAMs if the J160 wasn't available or too expensive. Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 Far enough then- I assume its smaller, as the J160 needs tunnel cutting it seems. They have great ratios, closest I've found on stock road cars. Quote
malachiTE72 Posted January 25, 2012 Author Report Posted January 25, 2012 ok because ive been reading that some people have used the w58 behind the 3sge because of turbo purposes... and i do have a upgrade 3s trubo sitting at my cousins house. And one of my friends told me the T series rear will hold up for awhile its plenty strong. but i was thinking about locking it. whats your opinions on that???? Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 Nah- You will blow it sooner or later, welding it up puts tremendous stress on axles & drivetrain as one side fights against the other. Ruins the handling and the tyres too. An LSD is the only way to go, and if you do get the turbo on then something beefy like a Skyline diff would be best. Quote
malachiTE72 Posted January 27, 2012 Author Report Posted January 27, 2012 interesting... that would pricey but what about a 85 gsl rearend would that be able to hold up because there are plenty of rx7's... or a 240 rear?? just trying to get a idea if i can't find a corolla rear with a lsd... Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 (edited) I don't know about the RX7s, but anything that has a coil rear end will be a starter. Common ones seem to be Skyline or Hilux, but I'd expect they all need mounts cutting off and welding on again. I'd get it running with what you have first and see if it all stays together. You can get an LSD for your T series diff without adding a lot of extra weight to the rear axle. - this is the FAQ/Wiki page http://www.rollaclub...ferential_Gears Common upgrades are a Celica/T18/Corona T series 6.7" diff (clutch-type TRD LSD centers available AU$1200 ex-Japan, Cusco and Kaaz also available for more money), R31 Skyline diff (factory 4-pinion clutch-type LSD and disc brakes), 8" Hilux diff (many ratios and LSD available, rumored to be quite heavy), Mitsubishi Scorpion (LSD and good ratios available out of some L300 vans, but rare), even live-axle Datsun 1600 (wagon). Depending on the car you are putting it into (obviouly KE3x, 5x and 7x are a bit wider than KE1x and 2x) just about any bigger diff you want to use is going to have to be shortened and have leaf mounts welded onto it. If putting into a KE3x, 5x or 7x, then Celica/T18 diffs will fit without shortening, but with the correct mounts welded on. malachiTE72 Posted January 29, 2012 Author Report Posted January 29, 2012 cool thats helps out pretty good and gives me a good idea. but i have one more question??? i was reading that you can take a zinki lsd and shave the axles in a te72 by 5mm and the zinki lsd will just drop right in even though the axles and bearings arent as beefy as the kouki rear end on a gts.. because i know a te72 rear is basically a sr5 rear end..
