ke70trent Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 so i've just got myself a ae90 hatch and I'm having trouble working out what engine is actaully in it! thought some one out there might have a better idea! so on the vin plate it has 6-AF (the 1.4 DOCH) But in the engine it has a sticker saying "4A 3m/t"? and on the rego paper it has for the engine no. 4A9144979 so with a quick bit of research (wiki) i think it is a 4AF DOHC 16v? as the photo is the exact same setup on top to look at! but the 4Af never came out in a car in australia! so i've got no idea whats going on! other then possable jap import engine? but who would import a carbie 4A engine? MYSTIK[RL] Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 4afc was released in aust, have one in an 1989 ae92 cs hatch. quite possible the original motor died and was replaced. Quote
Ben-89 Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 Trent your research is correct :y: The 6af is the 1.4 twincam. 4af is the 1.6 twincam, if there is a "C" after the 6af stamping it means the car is a carburettored version (which you would probably know). The other sticker on the cam cover you speak of 4A3m/t tells you engine capacity and type of gearbox package, It sounds like a 1.6 with manual transmission. Looks like the previous owner did the car a favour :) Have you put a rides thread? Quote

'C' does not mean carburetted, it stands for California emissions spec. It almost universally appears on carbied Toyotas, but not all carbied Toyotas have 'C'-spec emissions packages (all dogs have four legs but not all animals with four legs are dogs) 3m/t is weird though as that would by convention mean a 3-speed manual (which doesn't exist in Corolla-world). 3-speed auto, yes, but the manuals were all 5-speed. Thanks for that Ian, I should have known that it stood for Californian spec emissions :y: The other sticker I can only think of is the 3a/t denoting it as a 3 speed auto. Maybe a typo from Trent?
