rxsammy Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 So I picked up a 1983 KE70 last week. I had been thinking about getting a car again, never had a Toyota, had quite a few old Mazdas and a couple of Datsuns. This was fairly cheap so I thought I might as well snap it up and see how much it needs to get it back on the road. It had been a courtesy car for a local mechanic. Not 100% if I'm going to keep it yet, I'm a poor uni student so might move it along if I find it needs too much. It's got a stock 4k-c which seems to run great and a 4 speed. Here are some teaser pics: Dodgy repairs under fuel flap. Rust is bottom of rear guard, pretty bad but seen worse, I sanded this back and painted with rust converter. Plan is to just fibreglass filler this up and get through road worthy. Probably look at it in the future when it starts bubbling through again. Old repairs under fuel flap after grinding it back. Just gonna bog over this too for now. Rust in fuel filler, have to do something about this, can you just swap the filler neck? Example of some of the rust in boot sills after grinding back a bit. If I keep the car I'm going to keep it pretty much stock while it's going ok. Plans are: - Get some generic chrome door mirrors - New shocks and lowered springs in front - Prob chopped EA falcon springs in back - Urethane bushes all through front. - Basic stereo - Fit Sports Steering Wheel I've already got - Maybe extractors and 2" exhaust at some point. - Keep the steelies on it until I can afford either some MA61's or some other awesome oldskool rims. Thanks for looking, Sam Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 (edited) Welcome to the keto family, looks like a good base to start with. Typical rust, but ive seen worse. If your gonna bother fixing the rust make sure you reseal your tail lights and get a new boot seal if the old one is poo. Looking good :y: Edited March 31, 2012 by B.L.Z.BUB Quote
Ben-89 Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 Welcome Sam, Where abouts in Melbourne are you located? Going by the photos and street only parking I'm guessing maybe Brunswick/Coburg area?? Its a great tidy car i'd seriously consider putting away some $$ to repair that damage properly. Once you cut away the damaged areas theres not much left of them in the rear. Will it be an undercover car, or street parked? Ive got one identical, white se little rust always (above tail light) always garaged. Just doing dent removals around the rear 1/4 panels so the rust prone area have been stripped and thankfully its all clean but as I said do it once and do it properly. There are few e7 enthusiasts so keep the updates coming :y: Quote
Willis Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 There are few e7 enthusiasts so keep the updates coming :y: Yes, yes there are. May as well keep it for a while...You never know, you may even come to love it...Hahaha Quote
rxsammy Posted April 1, 2012 Author Report Posted April 1, 2012 Hi guys, thanks for the welcomes. Ripped out the old dash pad and chucked in the new one I got off a rollaclub member today. Wasn't half as annoying as changing dash pads usually is. Old dash pad, all cracked and warped. New pad in, it's the lighter blue but it looks alright. Yep, Ben-89 I'm in Brunswick. If there's anyone nearby be good to meet some rolla buddies. I'm new to doing body work n mechanical stuff by myself. Trial and error is my approach at the moment. At the moment I'm just going to "fix" the rust with fibreglass filler and try and get it rego'd. It'll be kept outside, it's obviously got quite a bit of bog in the rear from crappy previous repairs. Goal for now is to get the boot watertight and hopefully get 6 months or so out of it before I look at repairing it properly. I'll like to give it a shot at repairing myself when I've got more time up my sleeve. Like I said unfortunately I'm pretty poor at the moment so gotta count the pennies n do as much of it that I can do myself. After I fill the rust next thing on the list is to hopefully get some second hand strut inserts and put some urethane bushes through the front end. Never done this myself before so should be interesting :) be awesome if anyone wanted to give me a hand, happy to pass on some cash or booze or what not. Cheers, S Quote
rxsammy Posted April 1, 2012 Author Report Posted April 1, 2012 Any info on the rust in the fuel filler neck? Can this piece just be swapped over? I'm guessing it's pretty bad to have rust getting into the fuel tank.. Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 Thats why fuel systems have fuel filters. I wouldnt stress too much about it. Check the condition of your fuel filter, if it looks ok then you probably shouldnt worry too much. If it is full of crap, then worry. Just had a look at mine, its the same if not worse. Quote
Willis Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 Just change your fuel filter regularly. Should be sweet. Quote
rxsammy Posted April 1, 2012 Author Report Posted April 1, 2012 Ok cool, thanks guys. I won't worry about it too much then. Fuel filter looks fine too. Quote
dpb Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 Mines also the same pretty common by looks of it. If your ever down my way id be happy to help you out with a few things Quote
rxsammy Posted April 2, 2012 Author Report Posted April 2, 2012 Did a little more work on my temporary rust repairs today. Fiberglass filled the holes around the tail light. Never used this stuff before, tricky cause its so sticky but came out alright. Also filled the holes in the boot sill so at least my boot should get less water in it. Do people usually make up their own new taillight rubber seal thingos?? Fiberglass in bottom of rear guard. I should take bets on how long this will last. I give it 3 months ;) Another layer of bog and a few coats of primer on the repairs under the fuel flap. There's a bit of metal missing here, was hard to get the bit under the flap straight. It's not great but its way better than it was. Thanks dpb, might have to take you up on that sometime. Do people usually drill a hole in the bottom of the rear guard so water can get out if it happens to get in there? Thanks again to everyone for the comments, Sam Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted April 2, 2012 Report Posted April 2, 2012 I drilled a hole in each side. Even after what I thought was a solid tight seal I still get a little bit of water in the boot in torrential rain. Quote
rxsammy Posted April 6, 2012 Author Report Posted April 6, 2012 Did a little more work on the e7 today. Would of got the back end painted if the rattle can I bought wasn't stuffed. Bloody paint went everywhere. Put in the tacho cluster I got from Pick-a-Part yesterday. Pretty good for 25 bucks. Thanks to Ben-89 for letting me know it was there. Also chucked in an old sports steering wheel I had, love this wheel. Peeled off the silver pin striping on one side, this was so annoying.. but looks better. Gonna keep the red on there. Hopefully the rain will hold off tomorrow and I get some time to give the back a quick paint. Quote
Ben-89 Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 This is definetley one of the cleaner e7s getting around, was good to catch up too. Did you wash down/polish the side of the car after removing those silver stripes? Looks shinier. Keep up the good work :y: Quote
altezzaclub Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 Do people usually make up their own new taillight rubber seal thingos?? yep- self-adhesive door seal for houses. You can vaseline over the sides of it once its stuck on, tends to pick up fine dirt but it waterproofs it well. Red stripe looks good! Quote
