Removing/installing Chrome Trims Around Windows

Howdy doody,

 

I'm going to be pulling the chrome trim off the rear window of a KE70 to put on my own and don't know how to go about it. I don't want to bend or break it so I'm asking you guize.

Not a direct piece of help.

But heat generally helps get everything off.

So I assume it would help with this.

I remember someone throwing out the idea of using something flat, like a butterknife to kinda gently jimmy it off.

Yeah, I was planning on just jimmying it with a couple of flat blades, but I don't know if there's a better approach or not.

 

I could go over it with the heat gun and then maybe try lifting it off with the stew divers.

They are just clips, no heat required. Ive never removed them but I'd just use a wide flat blade and a lot of patience.

If there is one in a wreckers near you go and practice on that :D

If you ruin them there are a shit load of ke70 sedans at Kellys wreckers.

Had a look at the trim today. It was broken so I didn't get it, but from the looks of it it's just held under the lips of the rubber seal. No clips, no adhesion. I reckon a heat gun and some TLC would get them off and on without too many "oh ʞ©$ɟ"s.

 

Still looking but I'm sure I'll find some. They'll really set off the venetians I just threw in there the other day (car pornography. Car.....nography).

Oooh you mean the thin chrome stripe around the back window hey? it has a plastic strip inside it to keep it straight but its so old and brittle it breaks. Also the chrome kinks and bends :/ Front and side window chromes are easyyy compared to this

I thought that chrome is there to space apart the rubber and hold the window in place..? Soo whats stopping your from coming out haha!!?

The chrome is just decorative. I've had a closer look at the rubber and it's by no means supported by the trim. The one I saw today had fallen apart and the plastic was like rice crackers.

 

If keeping the integrity of the old window seal isn't a priority (i.e. wreckers' car), I could just cut the rubber to get it out. Then let future me deal with getting it back in. Future me's a dick anyway probably.

The trim is pretty easy to remove; just get a flat blade under one corner and run it down the length of the seal a couple of times until it gently lifts off. I had a go at a corona at the wreckers and it was easy, but their KE70 was a mission because the seal had gone all hard and crackly. I had to destroy the seal to get it off intact.

 

I'll hopefully be installing in mine later today so I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

 

 

 

Ok, just finished installing (most of) the trim for the rear window. It's a bit of a headache, but if you have the patience it'll wedge right in. Try and resist the temptation to just push it in, as the lips on both sides of the seal will go under instead of over.

 

If you get the stew diver on the right angle you can slide it up the seal, lifting bit by bit and slowly pry it in.
