4K Hiccups?

4ke30

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

since winter started my 4k ke30 was experiencing hiccups/missfire at low revs, idle is fine but there is no acceleration,

wasn't sure if it was the moisture in the air causing a bad mixture or my spark plugs or what,

so what i did:

- sprayed some carby cleaner ( possibly to much after i sprayed the engine died)

- pulled carby apart gave it a good clean blew it out with compressed air replaced float valve which was completely blocked with sh#t

still seams flooded at this point, so i adjusted my spark plug gaps from 1mm to 0,8mm and left the plugs out for the excess fuel and carby cleaner to evaporate

is there any diagnosis for the problem in the first place and am i on the right track?

thatnks for the help

also this is a part next to carby, i have no idea what it is and i don't remember seeing it, it doesnt seem to fit anywhere that it can reach

I'm no mechanic but since no one else has posted yet, I'd say it's the carby. Just not tuned for colder temperatures. On your airbox is there a little lever on the main intake pipe thingy?? It should have like a winter/summer option selectable. Winter being below 15 degrees celcius...Maybe give it a rev in either option and see how it goes. It won't be under load but then you could always go for a drive....

Does it only do it under load? if yes then try giving it a little more spark advance.

If it happens regardless of load or if the advance doesn't help then carb is the right place to look, might be worth checking how the fuel is flowing out of the accel pump?

Mine was doing it, then i serviced it and changed fuel filter and it was running alright. At the end of the day it's a 28 year old engine, :P. Mine still misfires when it's very cold after i put the choke back in but clears up after a minute or so.

Most definately have to keep that in mind does it only do it when the car is cold?? My car flat spots when it's cold but I warm my car before I go anywhere so don't really have the issue

But good idea is to check your points haven't frosted or corroded and the gap is correct

yes it seems to only do it under load, i always let it warm correctly and my filter is set to winter, ive left it for 2 days now to let fuel and carb cleaner evaporate ill give it a start later on today and see what happens,

my carby not tweaked for winter + large gaps in plugs would probly be the case,

is it possible that my old battery is having a bad influence on it aswell?

Do this.

Looking at Perth's weather at the moment you're right in the sweet spot for serious carby icing. If it gets worse when its colder then I'd say with a fair bit of confidence that you're experiencing carby icing.

The chart wont be completely true for corollas. It's designed for aircraft which are always sucking in ambient air (unless the carb heat is on) rather than somewhat warm engine bay air. But if you're sitting in the moderate or serious icing areas then you're gonna get some degree of icing.

I'd be going bsck to basic's first

What did the plugs look like, can you post a pix ?

New plugs and points oh don't forget fuel filter too.

Check dissy and rotor for carbon arching.

When you had the carby apart did you loose the little ball for the accellrator pump, IF this is missing the pump discharge nossle can leak fuel into primary venturi.

How did you adjust the float ? you need to hold air horn upside down and adjust for about 5mm clearance between float and air horn.

Check timing.

Did you check the little filter inside airhorn that is connected to the seat.

Note I get icing on my daily but it's usally on fogey night, never during the day.

Let us know how you go.
