mickjbuist Posted August 17, 2012 Report Posted August 17, 2012 Hello everyone, yesterday I got home and noticed a bad burnt smell coming from the front passenger wheel. The hub cap was bloody hot so I just left it overnight. I pulled the hub cap off this morning and found that the dust cap was off and it had spread a nice bit of grease all over the inside of the hub cap. The car still rolls quite easily (maybe the best it ever has). My question is would the grease produce a burnt smell if it came in contact with the rotor and what has made it so hot. The car wasnt pulling to the left or right, and brakes seem in good working condition. thanks guys Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted August 17, 2012 Report Posted August 17, 2012 (edited) Put the cap back on with new grease inside and see what happens. Did you compare the heat in it to the other wheel. Was it a big difference. Could just be worn bearings overheating as all the grease has fallen out from the dust cap popping off. Edited August 17, 2012 by B.L.Z.BUB Quote
parrot Posted August 18, 2012 Report Posted August 18, 2012 Front hub bearings are cheap and simple to replace. One of the first jobs I ever did on my car. Don't screw around, just change it. Quote

Also check the brake caliper is operating propely, I know you said it spinning freely but might be differant when hot , i had this problem with joshs ke36 i changed his calipers to girlock and changed his rotors and put new bearings in . cheers woz Quote
flyinwall Posted August 18, 2012 Report Posted August 18, 2012 also check the flexible brake lines to the wheels as they stretch and perish over time and can cause the same problems (i had this happen to me on a landcruiser) Quote
