Dreaded Diff ...

So here is the deal;

I currently have 2 wagons

1 Ae71 with a t50, and a busted diff center

1 Ke 70 wagon with a 4 spd etc

I had a look underneath both wagos and was thinking of swapping the good diff from the KE70 in to the AE71,

Both diffs to my understanding are borg and warner, (bolt housing facing the rear of the car).

Is this possible ? will i have to modify anything to make it happen.....will the diff ratios be the same ....tailshaft ?

Cheers

A

If they look the same they are the same. The banjo diffs are made of stamped steel plates welded together, the Borgies are cast. The borgies have the access plate bolted on the back, as you saw, while the banjos have the complete removeable diff unit that bolts onto the housing from the front.

The ratios I would expect to be different, but I don't know. The auto 4K uses a 4.3, the manual 4K uses a 4.1, so with the extra power of the 4A they should have lowered the ratio from whatever the 4K wagon uses..

Use the T50 tailshaft, the rear ends will be the same, the fronts different and the lengths might be different.

If you repeat whatever you did to bust the AE71 diff, the other will break just as quickly.....

If they are both Borgwarner diffs they should swap over with no problems, check the diff code on the firewall and match it up with this:

The 'translator' for diff codes is as follows:

First digit:

A = 138mm

B = 145mm

C = 6.25"

D = 6.62"

E = 7.1"

F = 7.5"

Fourth digit:

2 = 2 pinions, not factory LSD

3 = 2 pinions, yes factory LSD
