5k_ke20
I have a 5k with a Gemini 1600 Niki carb and extractors and 2 inch exhaust. The engine has been in and running for about 4 months. 3 months with the Gemini carb. Today it shit itself. It will idle but as soon as u press the accelerator it just dies, then idles again. If u hold the accelerator down it will fire, then a second will pass, and it will fire again. RAA man said it could be blocked jets but I was sitting at the traffic lights when this happened. I thought it might have some thing to do with my timing or vac advance but I'm not to sure. The gemi carb is coming off in the morning and the stock-o carb is going back on to see if it was the carby (blocked jets). Any ideas??? Boost+k
check your fuel filter an't blocked... maybe run without it for testing... next i'd check fuel pressure. maybe watch how full the fuel filter is with it running and see what happens when you acc (usally stay about half full. but really sounds like you might have some dirt or paint chip blocking something in the carb. also check float level
Trev
You might just need to tune the carby a bit cause it is sucking in too much air.
5k_ke20
I did have a quick look at the fuel filter but i will give it a go with out. Float level in the carby is exactly how it should be. If that doesnt work the stock carb is going back on and i will get a rebuild kit for the gemini carb. Any thing i have over looked so far? thomo
clagged up carbie, change it first or you'll get your head full of maybees, change a bunch of stuff you don't need to, and never know which bit you stuffed with fixed the problem
5k_ke20
Cheers for all the help. Stock carby will be cleaned this arvo and put back on. Just to eliminate all those maybe's. Cheers Harley
Trev
Can i just add this. When you have a proper tuned car and u rev it it will rev fine but if you take the air filter off it will SOMETIMES (depending on the car) be sluggish and may wanna stall and thats why i said it is more of a case of sucking too much air. 5k_ke20
Stock carb went back on today. Timing adjusted slighly by hand and cleaned the plugs. Runs ok now. It will be getting service and tune this week and hopefully all will be ok. Cheers for the help. Harley
Tham
I have a 5k with a Gemini 1600 Niki carb and extractors and 2 inch exhaust. The engine has been in and running for about 4 months. 3 months with the Gemini carb. Hi, I didn't realize that a Nikki from a Gemini 1600 could fit the 5K ? I've always thought of replacing the Aisan on my Corolla 4K with a Hitachi or Nikki. The Aisan generally idles like crap, even the new one which I have now. I drove a Gemini from 1983 to 1993, and the Nikki was a very reliable and economical carb, idling very smoothly right up to when I sold the car. It did flood once or twice, which I heard is a problem with Nikkis, especially the one fitted to the Datsun 180K in Malaysia during the 80's. Did you have to make modifications to the manifold mounting bracket, throttle linkage and air filter housing ? I note that the Nikki also has separate fuel inlet and fuel return pipes. Thanks very much. I've heard that the Hitachi is a very reliable carb too, and the Nikki is similar in design, since it is a subsidiary of Hitachi. Tham
tham, :faq: Thanks for the info, Love KE. Very informative, never knew fitting a Gemini's Nikki was possible. Quite extensive modifications, however, no mechanic in Malaysia would know how to do this. Wished Nikki made direct replacements for the K-series engines. Found a site in the UK here, but no response from them. Maybe they don't sell to Malaysia. http://www.carbs.freeuk.com/nikki_carburetters.htm
5k_ke20
Yeah mate its all covered in the FAQ. Pretty simple. Only takes an afternoon and it was very economical compared the the aisan. Cheers Harley
