PigSlapper Posted October 30, 2025 Report Posted October 30, 2025 Hey people, i am looking for advice on what to do with my ae71 that has been converted to the dreaded S-series Ae86 differential (for reasons beyond me). The diff is currently sounding like a helicopter is taking off from my back seat, and i have been quoted around $900AUD to get it refreshed with new pinion and carrier bearings. However, I'm wondering if its worth refreshing the S-series diff or just spending the money on putting a T-series/ standard Borg Warner/ other options into it as i intend to do some occasional wetpans and potential drift events in the future. Any advice would be appreciated! Quote
altezzaclub Posted October 30, 2025 Report Posted October 30, 2025 T-series yes, stock Borgie...meh! Of course any diff you buy is 40years old and probably needs rebuilding anyway. I had my T-series done earlier this year, but I can still hear a slight whine from it, everything else is worn as well as the bearings. Make sure you have the bearings in your hands before pulling the diff out if you need the car. 1 Quote

Looks like i can get a T series from a Celica for 1000$ in "good" condition, (or another one for $300 that looks flogged and covered in rust) what else would i need to make it fit?? I'm assuming my tail shaft plate wont line up from what I've read, but will the brakes need much tomfoolery to get working? And yeah, I will probably be rebuilding whatever i buy anyway, but I just can't justify throwing money at an S series. Thanks for your reply! Quote
altezzaclub Posted October 30, 2025 Report Posted October 30, 2025 My RA60 diff bolted straight in, its in The Girls KE70, but as you say the driveshaft yoke needs a T-series coupling. The panhard rod needs lengthening, easy enough, and you gain a wider track. The bolts on the RA60 are bigger so I needed particular washers to centre the KE70 bolt in the RA60 arms. The brake are bigger, you'll probably need new slave cyls, but they run fine on the KE70 system. I put some notes on diffs in here- https://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/42407-the-girls-ke70/page/5/#comments and here's the diff change- https://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/65709-how-to-fit-a-celica-diff-to-a-ke70/ Quote
