Hi All,

I have an AE82 Twin Cam with aircon - went to do my first oil filter change today. WTF?! Talk about impossible to get to the oil filter! Exhaust blocks it from top, air con compressor blocks from bottom - can sort of get to it going past starter and behind exhaust manifold. Is there a trick or a filter wrench that anyone can recommend? Mine just wasn't going to work. Ended up just doing an oil change...

Cheers,

Todd

hmmm... is the engine in the ae82 a 4af? i've got a 4afc (carb) in my ae92 and i had the same problem. It is hard to get to on my engine too, but i just kept at it and did finally get it off without a wrench. If you do get the old one off i recommend putting a bit of the new oil on the thread before you screw the new one on, since this seems to make it easier to remove for the next time. as far as i've read the filter is only really effective for the first short period of use, since it picks up all of the 'large' gunk pretty quickly, so i would say that you should really have another go at replacing the filter for the good of your engine.

best of luck!

ps. i don't know of any trick to it, just heaps of elbow grease and commitment!

Hi Tibor,

Thanks for the quick response.

The Twin Cam AE82 has the 4AGE. Tried the persistence method - but came close to dropping a match in the engine bay and quickly running away.

Best thing to do when trying to take the oil filter out is to get in with a filter removal tool and crack the seal whilst the engine is COLD. Oil changes are best done on a warm engine, so do this first before you crack the sump bolt and drain the oil.

In addition, working from under the car is much easier, especially if you have small hands. You'll most likely need to take the slashguards off, and any oil still trapped in the filter is likely to spill as soon as you take it off, but it should be much easier than trying to squeeze your hand down past the manifold from above.

Finally, if all hope seems lost and you can't for the life of you unscrew the filter, jam a flat-bladed screwdriver through it and use that to crack the seal.

A few more tips for installing, too; Always make sure the sealing washer came off with the old filter, otherwise you'll have a major oil leak. Smear fresh oil onto the sealing washer of the new filter, and maybe even pour a tiny bit of oil into the filter first (some people don't recommend this, as it means the first bit of oil through the engine won't have been filtered). Never do up the filter all the way, as it makes it a bugger to get off next time. Toyota recommends doing it up until you can feel the sealing washer starting to squash, then another half-turn or so. DON'T screw that thing in until it stops.

Hi All,

Thanks for your responses and tips, much appreciated.

Bought a better oil filter remover off Ebay - hope I'm not breaking any rules linking to it and NFI, etc. - Oil Filter Remover. It seems to fit nicely going past the starter and behind the extractors. Haven't actually removed the filter yet but a trial fit showed that it could get to the filter, gripped the filter nicely and had enough rotation to crack the seal.

Will give it a try in the next few months - think the next challenge will be not getting oil everywhere - and removing the seal if it sticks to the engine...

i have a gze and the oil filter is in a stupid spot behind the exhaust.if you still can't get it off you can take the radiator out and the grill and you can sort of get ya hand on it but this is if you have no other way of getting it off. :)

In addition to Hiro Protagonist! :y: With a good correct size oil removal tool you should be able to get it off in seconds even with only cm's to move it. You shouldnt have to remove the radiator. The 4ages I have had used a z386 (RYCO) or equivelant filter. They are a small filter. 4acs should be the same but I'm unsure! If your unsure which tool to get go to a car parts store and pick up a oil filter for the motor and then go and pick up a removal tool to make sure its not too big! Just check to make sure the removal tool when fully closed is noticably smaller than the filter. You don't need a huge tool in this case..... They can be too big! :D They are as cheap as $20. Probably less and will last ya for ages.
