road_crew Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 (edited) Hi guys, not sure if you know me of not because I am quite new to the forums, and haven't posted for a couple of months. I have a ke70 corolla that i bought as my first car a few months ago and I'm keeping it standard. I'm also only just learning about cars, so forgive me for not speaking in car terms and jargon (also forgive me for asking seemingly easy questions). I have a can of $4 spray on fish oil, and although I generally know what to do with it, I want to make sure I am using it correctly and understand it fully. My car has recently developed a little bit of rust, one bit which is not just surface rust :) . The things that I wanted to know about the fish oil were... 1) Are there brands/types of fish oil that are better than others? (keeping in mind that I have the cheap one). 2) Is there such thing as using too much fish oil? Does over using it cause corrosion of paint etc? 3) I understand that there are different types of rust preventative for the under side of the car, would the fish oil that I own have any effect if i sprayed it, for example, under the wheel arches? Or am I just wasting my time? 4) is it a good idea to lightly scub the area with, say, steel wool before I apply the spray? am i in any danger of ruining paint if i do this? 5) will this stuff do anything at all for my non-surface rust? Will it stop it from spreading? 6? *NEW* will washing my car render the fish oil useless? like, will i have to reapply it after every wash? cheers! Edited August 12, 2006 by road_crew Quote
Raven Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 1. Fish oil is fish oil as far as I know. Never used the stuff though. 2. You'd want to knock out the rust and get it back to solid steel before you apply anything to it. It is just oil so it shouldn't eat anything away. 3. Someone else can answer that. 4. Refer to my second answer. 5. Refer to question 2 again. Gettin all the rusted metal out of the rust hole and back to solid steel and then apply some rust converter and then prime it and that should hold the rust off for a while until you get the funds to get some new metal welded into the hole. Hope that helps! Raven Quote
Dan Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 4) is it a good idea to lightly scub the area with, say, steel wool before I apply the spray? am i in any danger of ruining paint if i do this? Try rubbing steel wool on your mates car.. I hope you like hospital food. Steel wool is a no go for paint mate, just give the car a good clean before you do it. Quote

I asked that question because it said something to that effect on the bottle, that as much rust and flakey paint should be taken off as possible with something like a wire brush. but i don't think i know anyone who would let me test the theory on their car lol. thanks guys all your help has been great! for anyone else, there is a new question up in the main post, so more fun can be had with fish oil!! Fat Bastard Customs Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 I would generally stay away from putting it on external painted surfaces but for the rest, drown it in fish oil. Both my dad and I have used fish oil on all our cars and we never have rust issues unless there was rust there to start with. By what I've been told, fish oil has an acid in it that accually eats into the steel a litle and protects it from the elements (if youve ever seen trucks driving around the city with xxxxx acid on them but not a hint of rust on them anywhere, it that acid). Dads been using it since the 60's and its worked well for him, he swears by it, stinks like a bastard but. :) Quote
road_crew Posted August 14, 2006 Author Report Posted August 14, 2006 ok guys sorry about this lol... more questions... my boyfriend has told me I should pay particular attention to the insides of the doors. I know how to take the door off, but once I am inside, where should I spray? And if the car has it's original plastic stuff in the door, should i remove that to get behind it? .. if that makes sense cheers! Quote
Fat Bastard Customs Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Yes, take plastic off and cover everything metal, it can't hurt it, thats what ive doe 2 all my cars, no rust yet Quote
