An Interview With Ed

Was looking for "Dazda", trying to figure out what exactly this was (am guessing Datsun with Mazda motor? Or something to that effect...), and found this:

Ed Ordynski

It wasn't really a joke, or a funny, although it was kinda amusing, so I posted it here. I think this interview was done in the days when Ed used to drive (VR4?). I thought the section about pacenotes was interesting, and I liked the description of the active diffs in the Evo:

... the great thing about the Lancer is the electronic controls they have for the diffs. In a straight line you want all three diffs locked up and the Techs do this by plugging in a laptop and adjusting any of them for you. In corners you want more progressive locking at the front and with braking, all locked up again. Then there is the possibility of having the diffs controlled by throttle position or boost pressure. The Lancer also had a switch on the dash for making perfect stage starts. You flicked it on with 10 seconds to go and it holds the revs at 4600 rpm which is maximum torque. When the count hits zero you slide your clutch foot sideways and away you go. Then I tried to use the handbrake. Tommi had it set up so that when you did a handbrakey it put all 500 Nm of torque through the back wheels only. You could hold the power slide out of the corner for about 3 kilometres.

So cool. I want :)

Darn it, the more I go out and play with Redwarf and Mel and the rest and the more I read and stare at rally cars the more I want one... Maybe I should just rip out the 4AGE in Hal, plonk in a 2T and go rallying :D

There were a few Dazda's around. An associate navigated in one years ago. This was back in the Group G days of "Small car, any engine, go rallying!". This one had an engine out of one of the Peter Steyvesant Bathurst RX7's. He said when it hit 11000 rpm he stuck his fingers in his ears and waited for the engine to leap out of the bonnet. It then proceded to do that kind of revs all day. Publicly stated by this very experienced nav as his most memorable ride.
