  1. I'm having some issues with the bonnet closing now, I had to remove a metal bracket that went from bottom radiator support that connected to the bonnet locking mechanism, (to fit the FMIC) and now I need to work out a way to reinforce the top radiator support.

I have also been stuck in the engine bay replacing and re-wiring plugs and sensor.

Things to do, - work out why clutch pedal doesn't hold much pressure (only pops half way up), brakes are spongy.

Wire the horn for rego purposes, find a horn button for my steering wheel, get the intercooler silicon reducers.

Put upgraded turbo on and 3" exhaust.

  2. LOL !!! lately I've come close to ragging the car apart everytime I work on it lol :)

I've spent this morning replacing sensors and cleaning up wiring and trying to work out what stuff is where it goes, if you know what the below listed stuff could be please let me know.

    EDIT - Updated with findings

  3. :blinks:

This sounds very familiar...my housemate is planning on a 5E-FZE build, I picked his brains about it & what he knows he found on Google. :laff:

    Go for it! :y:

Interesting, your housemate is going down the supercharger route, how come? and what's it going into?

  4. Some pics from the weekend - working on the parts car.

    post-5-0-27638000-1333454160_thumb.jpg

Engine was lowered carefully down and the front of the car lifted up and then the engine pulled out.

Work bench - all the tools need to remove an engine, it actually came out really easily with nearly no fuss.

  5. I saw an awesome ke70 last friday at sunnybank shopping centre - clean white one sounded like it had a very angry engine!! Made me want one too now.

Anyhow a mate and me pulled the engine out of the parts car, i have it up for sale at the moment but I'm thinking of pulling it down and building a 5EFTE - That way my car will be a 1.5ltr again.

  6. Every fail is a lesson, as long as you don't do it again.

I'm learning the same way, it takes longer but fixing f**k ups really does make you appreciate proper method and thinking things out that extra 10 minutes.

Wise words!... there is nothing like the feeling of working on your own car though, granted that I have had a bit of help, but nearly every time I work on the car I learn something new.

I'm even working on my 04 Holden Astra lately, want to hear bad luck, I struck a pot hole at night and buckled the rim, and stuffed some suspension component - banging sounds, feels like a sway bar, major service is way over due, I have coolant leak I can't' pin, thermostat is sticking causing the car to over heat. I've already replaced broken ecu, numerous water pumps, one shock, rear discs, coil pack, I finally paid my rego so now to save up to fix it again. It doesn't stop!!! :|

Anyhow enough whinging, I found some decent reference material on 4EFTE plugs and what they plug upto, time to get busy.

  7. You arent having much luck with this car are you? :(

And I totally agree with your 3 points... especially the 3rd one haha

I am, and I'm not, I'm basically doing everything the hard-way, this could be demonstrated when instead of using the engine out of the parts car and working loom, I took the loom out and hacked it up, and pulled bits off the working engine, all due to not understanding how the car was wired up in the first place. But in hindsight now I know it would have been better to do a straight swap. So, I'm learning on the go, so I can't say is it a bad thing but not a good thing?

3rd point - 1300 words to go, 10pm, - my eyes are burning.. :blinks: ... got to keep on writing! :rolls:

Cannot wait to see this thing going!

Haha agree with your points mate, do it all the time!

Figure out why the intercooler let go? Would've been an interesting sight watching it remove itself.

Thanks man, I can't wait until rego!

I put the top mount back on and the Intercooler let go because I was lazy and didn't put any clamps on the piping, so the pressure blew it off,

Why do I even post my fail moments on here lol

    Anyhow, back to it!

  8. Anyone know why a battery wouldn't be holding charge, or failling to recharge on jumpers?

I had the new battery connected to jumpers to my Astra and had the Astra going, when I went to fire up the Rolla, it didn't start up, just sucked alot of power from the Astra.

**EDIT** - Due to a/c being left on in the Astra and the car was over-heated so they aux fan was kicking in

I finally got the battery going on, I left the car running for a while, when I came back to it it was idling a little high, 1250rpm, and missing every so often, I remember adjusting the air/fuel mixture in the past and thought this might have some kind of barring on it, so I gave the screw a half turn which in turn made the exhaust smoke up bad! blue smoke everywhere! I turned it back down and the revs fell but far, I turned it all the way and half a turn open and revs remain the same. I'm getting the feeling I shouldn't be touching things I don't really know where they should be set.

I had feeling that the smoke might be from the intercooler not plugged up, so I plugged it up and it made little difference. I gave it a good rev and the intercooler litrally flew off.

    Lessions learnt from today's experience:

1, If you don't know what it does, don't touch it.

2, Why mess with new stuff when the old stuff isn't fixed yet

3, Why mess with the car when my university assignment isn't done yet? :no2:

  9. Yep, that's crazy busy alright! Best of luck with your job & uni, car can (has to, whatever :P ) wait. :y:

Sounds like a good idea mate, do as much resting as you can! Nothing worse than having that illness hanging around for longer than it has to! :)

Thanks man, I'm back doing full time uni and working full time now, actually looking for a job upgrade too.

    "Sick day" eh? :P haha

Car sounds great! can't wait to see you get this thing on the road!

Thanks man, yeh I can't wait too, once the brake pressure is sorted I'll be able to drive it ... which is exactly what it needs, a good long drive to expose any hidden issues which it may have developed.

  10. Hey Andrew, sorry to see you moving down before we go for a cruise with the EL's. :(

I know how it feels been away from car action too - I still haven't pulled that speedo cable out for you, but I haven't forgoten! It's still on my things to get to list.

One good thing about Victoria is the amount tracks you have access to, and also some nice drives, ie great ocean road.

  11. i've been crazy busy lately with hardly any time for the car, ..currently applying to keep my job, talking to builders / renovators on the best course for house repairs to be able to legally rent our house, cleaning and maintaining two houses and also trying to keep my uni grades stable after a lot of crap went down forcing me to pull out of uni, and working full time, lately I've been way to tired to do anything on the car, ... last thing was the EL31 thermo fan on the EP82 radiator, I actuallyed fired it up and drove it to the tap (gave me an exuse for a drive hehe... even if it was only a couple meters).

One thing I've noticed is that the brakes don't come on until my foot is planted to the floor.... and even then they'll come slowly on..

  12. Well, what a $h1t weekend this has been! Blue Things clutch gave up the ghost Friday afternoon, couldn't get one in until Saturday morning so proceeded to drop the gearbox Friday evening...& some of Saturday morning due to several bolts having to be convinced to to come off. By 'convinced', I mean hacksawed & belted with a hammer & chisel. A couple of things I did learn from doing this are:

    - You don't have to disconnect your brake lines, just hang the calipers off the springs with a bit of wire.

    - You don't have to disconnect your clutch release line, just push out of the way & ziptie it there.

    - Ditto for the coolant lines, just unbolt the thermostat housing from the gearbox, there's enough play in it to get the 'box off & on.

While I've got the 'box off, I might as well put the 5 speed I have laying around in, so new clutch in & bench press the gearbox back on. Put everything back on & do up, jump in & discover that something's not right with the gear shifter. Doesn't want to go full throw to either the left or the right, meaning I can only engage 3rd & 4th gears (I think). So I swapped Blue Things cables with some spare Twin Cam ones I have, no difference. Swap gearlevers, no difference, contemplated puling the whole gearshift assembly from Sudi & bolting it in, but I've been at this too damn long, I've been dripping sweat for the last 6 hours & I'm f**king over it!!! If anyone has any idea as to why my gearshift is not functioning correctly, please mention it? The only idea I have left is the gearbox is from an AE9x & the shifting mechanism is slightly different? I don't know, tired, sore & can't think straight... :(

Due to all this I missed out on going on a planned road trip to Gippsland & because of the f**king stuck bolts, missed a mates birthday shindig Saturday night as I was slaving away on this f**king thing & because of the gearshift, missed the AOMC Classic Japan Day.

    Pissed off!

Thanks for the tips, wish I knew more about gearboxes to be able to help :(

I can't put my finger on it, it may just be a faint glimmer of hope that the gearbox isn't stuffed but I think I might try getting myself ahold of a gearshift lever & cables from an AE9x series & giving them a go. Am doubtful the 'box is from an AE1xx series, but I get what you're saying about the throw distance. Cheers man, got my brain back on a track! :y:

It seems that 3rd/4th on the gearshift is 1st/2nd in the gearbox, for what it'll cost me from a wrecker it's worth a shot I think.

Failing that I'll be adding 40-ish kilograms to my scrap metal pile. :D

How does you pattern work, isn't it just normal 5sp? with reverse under 5th?

    What's a mechanical LSD?
