Blue Thing: The Daily / Motorkhana Hack (Now Efi)

RE: Cosmetic mods, subtle lip, not so subtle bonnet. Debating whether to add hatch spoiler, rear louvre or both. Then, to bright orange, or not to bright orange? That is the question.- 539 replies

For what it's worth, I'm more excited by being able to open the boot by pulling a lever, rather than having to get out & use a key to open it. Some technologies are worth it.- 539 replies

It's all there & AFAIK all functioning. Have to say it's nice to not have to hold a choke handle at cold starts. The next to do list is: - Swap front brake pads back to Bendix streets (still have the EBC's in from Sandown). - Wire CD player. - Wire O2 wideband. - Fit cosmetic mods.- 539 replies

Cheers guys, was f-ing exhausted but drove to work & back with the biggest smile on my face that even Melbourne traffic couldn't get rid of. Thought I bled the cooling system properly, obviously not as it developed the infamous idle hunt this morning. Gave it another go & it buggered off, also reset the idle speed & timing. Need to have a play with the TPS too, feels a little 'jerky' at low-speed with minimum throttle. It pains me a little to say this, but driving a 4A-GE again makes me realise just how.....rough.....my carb-engine was. Sure I got it running relatively smooth & it was responsive as hell, but JFC they are two totally different engines to drive. Speaking of which, engine autopsy coming soon. As are fuel economy numbers, quite interested in the comparison as everything else is the same (gearbox, suspension, the driver, driving conditions etc).- 539 replies

Thing is though, there's always more lists! What if I told you.....bandaids can fix bullet holes? I need a break from all the work/stress running that setup brings, it needs more work to actually be a success but I don't have the desire to do it currently. Pulled an all-nighter, was a bit stubborn to start due to dizzy being out a tooth & the fuel lines/rail being bone dry. But, at 5:30am this morning...SUCCESS! Drove to work, no leaks so far, timing's good, idle's good, I'm a happy camper.- 539 replies

I can relate to this, finding the motivation to go out into the 5°c shed is...difficult at the best of times. Probably an idea to take a break from car stuff every now & then, let the batteries recharge etc.

Finally got the fuel tank back, after 9 days. Get it home, turned it upside-down to have a look & a heap of dust/dirt fell out. Required a damn good flush out in order to be usable. So if anyone feels compelled to use the services of Reg's Radiators in Hoppers Crossing, my advice is DON'T. Heaps of "while I'm here" stuff done, all gaskets/seals. Had a minor delay with the fuel system, got the tank in only to discover that the fuel return lines are also different sizes. Back out, swap lines, back in. Made up for it yesterday, it was a good, productive day.- 539 replies

Not really keen on doing it myself, done my fair share of rust treatment before. Have heard good thingd about the POR15 kits though, if I had the time again I'd try that. It's due for pickup in Wednesday evening, it will be going straight into the car, connected & filled to the brim with BP's finest. Dash in. Instrument cluster in. Cluster cover in. Still need to do some minor electrical work (cd player & O2 wideband wiring) but for the most part, the wiring transplant is done. Which includes the body-loom. The engine's on the stand for a good scrub/clean up, thinking of changing things like camshaft seals etc (while I'm here.....) before it gets bolted to the C56 & thrown into the engine bay. Tempted to bolt the Exedy HD clutch that was attached to it back on as well.- 539 replies

Had the fuel tank dropped off for treatment on Tuesday, called up on Friday to see if it was done...hadn't been touched. "Mate, this tank has a bit of rust in it!" "No $h1t, that's why I brought it to you." Took the tank to another business, should be able to pick it up on Wednesday. Sure, I could scour wreckers looking for a better condition tank, but chances are they're in similar (if not worse) condition. Plugging away day by day at the wiring loom swap. It's tough getting much done during the week, so most progress happens on the weekend.- 539 replies

All the wiring required to run an EFI engine. While I was there, also removed the fuel flap/hatch release cables/levers for installation into BT. I don't have to put this dash back together, Blue Things on the other hand... There's a heap of rust in the EFI tank that's going to have to be cleaned out before I can use it. Urgh, there's always something.- 539 replies

No need to source one thankfully, the SOHC-carburetor wiring loom that BT came with was modified for the quad-setup. I have since removed it & storing it away for later. Am removing the DOHC-EFI loom from the white TC (EFI & Carby looms are quite different) to install into BT, I also have the EFI loom from the project car if need be. :)- 539 replies

It could be a lot worse I guess, it doesn't have A/C or P/S so there's less hoses/wires to deal with. The loom needs a good clean up & re-taping in some places. I tapped into it for power/MAP sensor signal etc at a few points & my electrical work from 7 years ago leaves a lot to be desired.- 539 replies

The nearest bus stop to my house is a 45min walk away, then 15min to the train station, then a 45min ride, swap trains, another 10min ride then a 10min walk just to get to work provides a helluva lot of motivation. ;)- 539 replies

Fuel tank out. Wiring loom out. While the front wheel-arch plastics were off, decided to see how much crud had accumulated behind the guard. Now to repeat the process.- 539 replies

With the exception of it being a 3 rib block, that's what I had. Wouldn't mind it again though, the mid-range rpm has much more go. I hope not, spent a noticeable amount having it completely rebuilt for this engine. I suspect a fault in the block. It has been fun, thankyou to you all for coming along for the ride. :) The quads will return. Here we go again.- 539 replies

I entered BT in the trackday at TCCAV's Winterfest/40th Anniversary at Sandown yesterday. Not just for racecars, participants in the Show n Shine were given the opportunity to drive around the track under pace car conditions. Courtesy of a mate of mine, managed some in car footage. Playing overtakies with an AE82, completely missing the braking point at turn 1, an off-track excursion & a smokeshow to finish...This one lap has it all! My day didn't go so well, started blowing smoke in the first session & nothing I did during the day was able to rectify the issue. Managed to drive her home & to work this morning (to use hoists for inpection), she wasn't real happy though. She expressed her displeasure this afternoon by pressurising the radiator overflow bottle with oil. RIP Engine Number Two, you were fun while you lasted. I came, I tried, I failed. Twice. I have zero desire for a three-peat. The replacement is going to be a standard EFI 4A-GE 16v bigport.- 539 replies

I'm going to blame the twit who "installed" the original pipework, it was destined for failure. There was no long hair, so I can't blame the female of the household, basically just dirt blocking the pipe.

WGMG - DIYers who take basic plumbing back to a third world level. The angled pipe on the left is the bathroom sink (blocked), the one from under the house is the bath/shower (not actually connected to the trap) & the one on the right is the laundry sink. I get to fix this.

The results from Deni are in...Blue Thing finished 15th of 23 Outright, 13th on Handicap & 4th of 4 in Class A. Hitting a flag then a WD will kinda muck up your results for the day. Had a ball though, shame it took me three years to get my butt up there! :D

Agreed, it's not an end of the world thing, just personal preference. Managing tyre wear with directional wheels & asymmetrical tyres is fun enough as is. ;)- 539 replies

I am feeling the need to kill this mosquito, beginning to give me a headache. Distracted myself from it by installing the coilovers. Liking my existing ride height for its practicality, I only removed 10mm of height from the front & 5mm from the rear. Had a small drama at first, due to wheel offset/185 tyres, the inside edge of the rear tyre rubbed on the spring perch. Tried fitting a 175 tyre, this gave me clearance but I want to run the widest tyre possible & be the same at all four corners. Reduced the rear camber from -2.3° to -1.4° & this solved the problem. From start to finish the alignment took me about an hour & a half to get right, but when you have an alignment machine at your disposal & you're not paying for labour... :) Running -2.3° camber with 0.5mm of toe-in on the front & 0.0mm of toe on the rear. Test drove with the suspension on the softest setting, felt just like the KYB's with the KS lows. Went 4 clicks firmer & suffice to say that's firm enough for my local roads. The difference in handling is mind-blowingly awesome, the front has so much more grip & there is very little roll through corners & lunging under brakes. 10/10, would install again.- 539 replies
