ok peeps, a quick poll....

 

ive pretty much got $4k to play with for the van... and I'm still trying to work out whether to start with body or engine

 

but my problem is this... it seems that some people reckon ive only got enough money for one thing... but i'd like to do a bit of both

 

i'd really like to get the body fixed up and a respray... but apparently bare metal resprays + body work can be at least 4k and over.. so not good.. so i'd have to get a same colour respray, which i suppose would suffice

 

i also don't exactly know what i want to do engine wise yet.... again, my loose idea of super/turbocharging seems like costing close to the bad side of $3K, which means all i can probably do is get the engine rebuilt with maybe a Tighe cam and put on the Holley carb (dunno what size it is) that ive got.

ive got no idea where to start with DIY paintjobs... heh don't have any gear etc etc...

 

i spose the only way to learn is to try... but knowing me i'd f@$k it up beyond misery heh :blinks:

$4K in a paintshop won't get you very far unless you have some mates. That's one of the problems I have with the KE35 too, paint. I've been doing the priming etc myself, but I don't know if I'm game enough to topcoat it myself...

ok, do they charge as much if you only get the rust repairs done, and then maybe coat them with some rust inhibitor shit?

If you only get rust repairs done, it will be cheaper. They usually charge per hour, so if it needs more work, it costs more.

Hmm, I must be approaching the wrong sort of shops then. All the places I've been to have quoted me approx $4K for a push in push out job (everything already stripped). That's for prime & paint in flat acrylic white.

I've always thought painting a car in blackboard paint would be a fun idea.

Well I'm priming the car myself, so far about 75% of the car is primed. If I'm really hardworking I might even guide coat it.

 

I should be able to organise transport for the car (rob?), your dads place is a fair hike away though - if necessary I can rent a spray booth closer by - if you're willing to travel. I think spray booth hire usually comes with compressor, I have a spray gun (albeit not a flash one at all, but it works).

 

I'm hoping to get the car painted within the next 2 or 3 weeks, the car should be completely primed by the end of this weekend. Reason I'm pushing time a bit is cause that's the main thing that's holding up the progress of the 35 at the moment - paint. Unfortunately 2-3 weeks isn't exactly "heaps" of time in advance though...

hmm, whats all the fuss with acrylic paint? isnt that what all car paint is?

Fook, my trailer is at your command. 1st, 8th and 9th of Nov are bad for me though. I get to watch Melinda race/ crash the Dwarf those weekends.

Well, was going to finish priming the car this weekend but forecasts say it's going to rain lots so went and rented an engine hoist instead. Engine is now in, tomorrow I'll weld the mounts on (at the moment they're just sitting there):

 

 

I'll most definately have the car completely primed by end of next weekend.

 

How long does it take to paint a car (considering priming pretty much complete)? I'm guessing (from reading book and calculating drying and sanding times) 1 full day should be enough? If so, assuming I can get someone to paint the car, would 2nd work for you Rob? If not, maybe 15th/16th? Is that enough notice for you Nick? Like I said I'm happy to rent a spray booth (so that sorts out space + compressor I think). Else if Rob doesn't mind driving all the way out there... Argh, too much to think about!

Bugger me, is it only (possibly) going to Burpers? I thought you meant somewhere far away...... (where I'm not sure.) 2nd is achievable, but logistically hard. the other 2 dates are much better.

Nick: Ta for that, let me know how you go. As it stands I'm not 100% sure I should trust myself with painting the car, although with supervision I'd probably go okay.

 

Rob: Assuming I find someone to paint (and I get the rest of the car primed and ready to go - I hope it doesn't rain next weekend), want to make it tentatively 15th/16th?
