camerondownunder88 Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) Hi, The 5K I am about to put in my KE30 that I just bought has had a solid lifter conversion allready done to it (also a full clean up/rebuild). I was told it has solid lifters by guy I bought it off of who had it rebuilt BUT on the head it still retains its original rockers with no adjuster BAD if it has solid lifters This motor is going in my car this Saturday I need it to work I drive 500KM + a week so don't want to kill the 5k on first run due to running 0 to little tappet clearance. So main question is is it possible to tell what lifters the motor has with out relying on the rockers? Can I tell from say looking down the head or removing the sump? Also some one who has done this switch before Xany, superjamie, med man or irokin?? maybe... will WILL 4K rocker gear be a straight bolt on swap? I will be pulling a 4K out of the car to do swap so I will have known working rocker gear to swap but it must be direct as I do need this car so don't want to get stuck. Also what are the torque settings for the posts that bolt the rocker shaft to the head or do they get torqued down? Cheers Cameron Edited February 13, 2007 by camerondownunder88 Quote
camerondownunder88 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 Hi, Ok I know 4K had 2 types of rocker posts long and short. If I put 4K gear on will I have to source the long or short ones or source the ones the same height as the standard 5K ones? Cheers Cameron Quote
rollin_stock Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) Hi Cameron, you will have to get a lifter out and have a look. . I read on a NZ forum that 3f landscruiser lifters are a direct swap into a 5k with 3K push rods and 4K (steel) rocker gear. What head does the engine have? I'm doing this swap at the moment with a 3K BP head. Edited February 13, 2007 by rollin_stock Quote

Or you can use HOLDEN solid lifters with Datsun1200 pushrods and 3/4K rocker gear. 4K rocker gear will bolt straight on,i use early 3K rocker gear with aluminium posts and the datsun 1000/1200 pushrods. anastasios Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 are the landcruiser lifters solid? Quote
Xany Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) Ok, to swap the 4K rocker gear onto the 5K head....i'm almost certain it will be a straight bolt on job. However i'm pretty sure you will need the short post 4K rocker gear.....i think there was 2 different types from memory....see how you go, it you run into trouble give me a call. i'm msn you my mobile ;) Yes the landcruiser ones are solid, however i don't know of anyone that has done that conversion as of yet. rollin_stock Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) The p/no for a Landcruiser 3f lifter is the same as a 5k Ke74? solid lifter. Madrolla, the only reason I wouldnt use the alloy rocker gear is the changes in valve lash when the engine gets hot. Thats why toyota changed to steel later on in production. I knew there was a reason i used the 4K ones instead of the 3K rocker gear....and that was it....i remember now ;) i mean its only been about 4 years since i built the engine....lol Quote
camerondownunder88 Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 Hi, Thanks for all the help so far guys. Tonight after work I will pull a push rod and lifter out of the rebuilt 5K and see what is happening. But all I know is the motor is rebuilt has a shaved head new pistons and bearings and a general freshen up and all new valves and I was told ford falcon solid lifters in it. So I will get some photos and info to you tonight about what is really in it. But 3K rocker gear uses aluminum posts and 4K uses steel so better to use 4K but also from looking my 3K its rockers were made lighter/thiner than the 4K ones so in turn would be weaker. So madrolla is there a reason behind using 3K gear? Also I will be removing my oil eating 4K out of the car to do swap so Ill strip it down and also get info on its rocker gear and height for you all. As when the SC14 goes on this motor if this 5K doesnt have solid lifters all ready I will do the swap so ill let you know how I go. Cheers Cameron Quote
Felix Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 The lifters in my 5k are stock hydraulics "converted" to solids. Basically the lifters had the circlip removed and the guts emptied out. The pushrod cup was dropped down to the base of the lifter. Coupled with 3k pushrods and 4k rocker gear, this has worked perfectly since it was installed 2 1/2 years ago. With holden double valvesprings the valvetrain is good for over 8grand. The valvetrain is quieter then the 4k in my wagon and its' previous 4k. The only trouble I ever had is that the rocker adjuster screws initially just tapped on the underside of the rocker cover. This was remedied with a dremel. No point wasting money on a lifter conversion when you can use your old junk to do it for free. ;) Quote
rollin_stock Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 (edited) Just found this; '5k solid lifter part number 13751-61020 for a km36 liteace also cross references to 3f landcruiser engine' I don't know if there are 5k specific rocker assm and push rods.
