mlaser Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 (edited) G'day All Theres a chance i may get my ke25 project finished this year so i figure i should start thinking about the steps i need to take to get it on the road down here in South Australia. The car is a 1971 Ke25 (1971 from what i'm told is good for SA as it has less ADR's to live up to) changes from standard that will or have been made engine : 4agte g/b : w57 or w58 (can't remember which one) diff : probably end up being a shortened F series Brakes: Front = magna vented front discs, Rear = whatever comes with the diff upgrade suspension : koni inserts (i think), front and rear custom swaybar Interior : cobra bucket seats, stock everything else ECU: haltech e6k theres also no cable handbrake in it, its got a hydraulic handbrake setup So my question is..........how hard / costly is it going to be to get this car engineered down here and does anyone see anything that they really won't like. the car is from QLD and was previously engineered for a 3tgte (no idea if that has any bearing on the process) so would love to hear peoples opinions and or experiences. cheers Edited July 11, 2007 by mlaser Quote
Raven Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 Fitting a later model motor requires you to meet the emissions of the year that that motor was produced. Best bet is to speak to an engineer. I'll pop up a list of engineers in my next post. Quote
Raven Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 Your best bet is Rory Thompson. His workshop is now in Salisbury South, so call his mobile number, find out where he is and go have a chat (though it will cost you money but not sure how much). Cheers Raven Quote
Jono Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 i got my car engineered last weekend. its a ke20 with a 4age. its a 74 model and yes there are a fair few more ADRs which came out between 71 and 74. you will need a standard ECU, charcoal cannister, cat converter, cold air intake (for less emissions), brake booster. you already have bigger discs. i've had to complete a few extra mods to actually get my report next week. 1) box air filter (pod) to make a cold air intake 2) plumb back the oil catch can into the cold air intake area 3) retractable seat belts 4) extra bolts on my recaros (could have used 4 x 8mm as opposed to 6 x 6mm) 5) battery clamp (it was just wedged in the battery box in the boot with some foam) 6) shield fuel components (surge tank, lift pump, main pump, fitlers) Its been a busy couple of days; I've done all except 6. My report is costing me $1000 but i've got absolutely everything on it down to different clutch and brake master cylinders. Quote
mlaser Posted July 11, 2007 Author Report Posted July 11, 2007 crap totally forgot about the ecu. I'm running a Haltech E6K, in fact it only recently got wired up poo poo poo wonder how i'm gonna get around that?????????????????? i got my car engineered last weekend. its a ke20 with a 4age. its a 74 model and yes there are a fair few more ADRs which came out between 71 and 74. you will need a standard ECU, charcoal cannister, cat converter, cold air intake (for less emissions), brake booster. you already have bigger discs. i've had to complete a few extra mods to actually get my report next week. 1) box air filter (pod) to make a cold air intake 2) plumb back the oil catch can into the cold air intake area 3) retractable seat belts 4) extra bolts on my recaros (could have used 4 x 8mm as opposed to 6 x 6mm) 5) battery clamp (it was just wedged in the battery box in the boot with some foam) 6) shield fuel components (surge tank, lift pump, main pump, fitlers) Its been a busy couple of days; I've done all except 6. mlaser Posted July 11, 2007 Author Report Posted July 11, 2007 Hide it. :) thats everyones answer, guess it should be easy enough to hide. Can i seriously get away with that? reckon i can hide a hydraulic handbrake???? otherwise ill just have two handbrakes and not use the cable one :) at one stage i was considering getting the car engineered and registered in qld and then bringing it down here and registering it but was worried that i'd just have to get it re-engineered down here (note : car is still in qld) Quote
Raven Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 Yep, you will have to get it re-engineered down here as SA's state laws are different to QLD's state laws. Will need a cable operated handbrake as wellas thats how the car came from the factory. They don't call it a park brake for nothing :) Quote
Valandor Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 unless it is registered in your name in qld and registered in your name in sa. found that loop hole when i moved interstate basically if the car is retianing the same owner and registration detials and only the state is changing it doesnt need to go over regency. Redwarf Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 If you get it engineered in QLD, you're looking at (by my reckoning), an LA1, LB1, LC1, LD1 and an LK1 Mod plate. (and possibly an LA3, as the engine never had a Turbo factory in Australia.) I'd do it in South Aus. Quote
mlaser Posted July 12, 2007 Author Report Posted July 12, 2007 Spoke to some guy from sa transport today and he said that even with an upgraded engine the emission requirements are that of the year of the car and not the engine. BUT he did add that i may still be required to add a catalytic converter and a charcoal canaster anyway. Also i emailed rory (engineer dude) and for for 1 hour consult that includes preparation of an application to Transport SA for a statement of Requirements for a modified vehicle is $ 250.00 inclusive of GST. I'll try and update this with my progress as i go :) Fitting a later model motor requires you to meet the emissions of the year that that motor was produced. Best bet is to speak to an engineer. Raven Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 (edited) Ouch - $250 nasty nasty. I have spoken to Rory briefly before and your car will also had to undergo a torsional strength test and lane change test once done which will require you to probably hire out Adelaide International Raceway to have the lane change test performed. Lets put it this way. Its gonna be costly. Edited July 12, 2007 by Raven Quote
mlaser Posted July 12, 2007 Author Report Posted July 12, 2007 yeah it's looking that way, no wonder there are so many people driving around with engine conversions and not engineered. I'm going to investigate getting it engineered in qld as well just because i know someone who may do it on the cheap :). My g/f is moving down this year so i figure if i can get it done on the cheap in QLD ill register it in her name and bring it down when she moves down here and try the valandor loop hole. One of the reasons i want to do this is because i'm not going to be in SA forever and i'd like to think ill be keeping this car for a while and i plan to return to qld when i can get transferred within the company i work for. Otherwise i'll just bite the bullet and get the engineering done down here either way its gonna be an interesting and costly experience Ouch - $250 nasty nasty. Jono Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 sounds like SA has stricter engineering laws than NSW...! Quote
