Bolt on flares. They look tuff.

 

Are they legal in queensland?

 

And exactly how are they mounted? Do you bolt them on somewhere above the wheel arch and then cut the metal underneath the flare away with a grinder or something? Or do you mount them flush with the bottom of the wheel arch?

Hehe, :D granted, it may seem like an obvious question, but I'm not actually asking if you bolt them on. I'm asking where and how.

If your running wide wheels and low you'll probably need to cut them but if your just putting them on to make it look tough (in your eyes) you wont need to. Usually rivet/bolt it onto the guard. Look where other are bolted onto. If screwed bolted and you find out you need the extra room under the guards simple take off then cut then put back on no problems. It's also probably not best if you bogged it on the for the smooth look as it tends to crack sometimes. Hope that helps.

If you have bad wheelarch rust, then i guess it would definately be a good option. :D

As sinate said, if they're only cosmetic, just bolt em on. If you actually need the extra guard room, you'll have to cut them, have a look at the pics of mine here....

You'll also need to get yourself some flair tubing, which has a flat that sit under the guard and a beam that runs around the join to tidy up the edge.

Yep, thats exactly what i mean- ie. looking to get the car as low and wide as possible. I was actually wondering if i would need to destroy the panels. Worth it though!

The only ones ive seen are the 'universal' ones. Do they really work on any car no hassles, eg, a ke70, or is it better to try and find a particular brand for a particular model of car?

I just sold some universal flares that didn't quite "universally" fit my ke30. Looked like to much of a hassle. I ended up just flaring my guards with a hammer and dolly set. Turned out quite good, few skims of bog got them smooth. I only done it so that i would have enough clearance once the car was lowered.

 

Work out what wheels you want get them buy the tyres etc and fit see how much you need and go to panel beaters and see how much they'd want to flare/roll them out should be cheap or you can do it yourself like i did. There's a good chance you wont need flares if you get the right offset wheels. Although if flares are what your after you can always put them on afterwards. Make the flares the last option after you've got everything else sorted. You don't want to be cutting up your guards now then realise you could have done with out and just wrecked your car.
