Thats a factory feature with KE55's.

jip i wish i could move the filler elswhere but that would mean a drop tank and that would confict with other plans!

KE55's were built in Oz by AMI. KE30's in Japan. Tho some of the last KE30's during the change over were built in Oz. Like my KE30 (one of the last ones, made in the last month).

 

There is only one KE55 that was ever imported into Oz and that was the KE55p (Liftback) otherwise known as a KE50. (tho its not, its more like an update KE50 just like the KE55 is an update KE30.

Could be either AMI or japan built still in 1978 too hard to tell without investigating Australian content used on your car
