78_7kRolla Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 Well i've had this problem for a while but with no luck on fixing it you guys are my last resort. (sorry  ) Anyway, the problem is that my pc (yes it has vista) will not let me access any of the drives. It wont access any cd/dvd or any usb sticks. i have re-installed drivers, changed security settings, tried to reformat but still nothing. I have been on the geeky pc forums but still no help, and many people with the same problem have re-installed vista but still it occurs. Anyone that could shed some light on this problem would be a really great help  Matt. Quote
SoulSearcher Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 what sort of PC is it? custom built or a DELL, HP etc? Also Notebook or Desktop and where did you get it from? Quote
78_7kRolla Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) It's an Acer and the model is Power FH desktop. My dad came home with it, but i think it's from a acer salesman dude. Edited January 17, 2008 by 78_7kRolla Quote
7shades Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Step one: Format everything Step two: Install Linux, and never have a single problem ever again. Quote
78_7kRolla Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 i have formatted most things but still no luck. i don't want to format too much as i can't back up any of my stuff, because of the bloody problem. Quote
SoulSearcher Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 have you tried going into device manager and uninstalling the disk drives, usb devices and optical drives then restarting the computer? This should reinstall the correct drivers for each of the devices automatically. You may be using a limited account that disables the use of the above devices, make sure you're running an administrator account. Hope this helps some, Quote
78_7kRolla Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 Thanks lesley but i have already tried these procedures and have done so on different types of accounts. This problem is really getting to me  Quote
78_7kRolla Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) EDIT** sorry double post Edited January 17, 2008 by 78_7kRolla Quote
Raven Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 It's not the computer, its the operator  Go and reset the BIOS to factory defaults. unplug EVERYTHING but your main drive and see what happens. Quote
Jason Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 if you formated properly you would have already lost everything. Format the OS hdd and reinstall XP. Quote
78_7kRolla Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 Yes, but you see i can't reformat it because it's the family pc and we will loose all our data. What is BIOS sorry if it is a noob question? Quote
Jason Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 (edited) Maybe just stick a XP cd in and install it (ie have 2 OS installed at once) then use XP get your shit sorted. Back everything up then do a wipe. XP is sooooo much better. (cept DX10) I want to run vista but all the troubles my mates are having with I'm going to wait until they release a couple of service packs :D Also if you have access to another computer, pull the HDD and stick them in that one and back it up that way so you don't have to use your OS. My old rig was a pos and have to do this monthly... Infact Teddy has one of my HDD backed up on his sever computer :) Edited January 18, 2008 by Jason Quote
78_7kRolla Posted January 18, 2008 Author Report Posted January 18, 2008 Thanks for that, i will do that if my dad's mate can't fix it on the weekend. Thanks to everone from the bottom of my ahhhh hard drive! Cheers Matt. Quote
