irokin Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Something tells me this wont be an option on the R35 GT-R. A fantastic idea in my opinion! http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic.../808040393/1148 Quote
7shades Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Oh good. Another brilliant "Retard Assist" function. Just another in the plethora of anti-fun computers I will have to disable should I ever have the misfortune of owning a vehicle with it... (ask me how a stock JZX100 defeats its own purpose with its intrusive ETCS system) I do understand the need for automakers to cater for the lowest common denominator with these devices, but I do wonder sometimes what is the better option... My personal belief is that they should all be removed and people should be required to actually learn how to drive correctly as opposed to having the machine do it for them, however this Darwinian method of natural selection leaves the more competent drivers on the road vulnerable to death and dismemberment through no fault of their own. irokin Posted August 6, 2008 Author Report Posted August 6, 2008 Err well it is able to be disabled so I see it more as a driver aid, I wouldn't support it if it was compulsory. It'll stop the ditzy "oh i pushed the accelerator instead of the brake" crashes. I have found when driving falcons, because the pedal is so sloppy you find yourself suddenly doing 15+ over the limit. I just drive them on the cruise control because the pedal feel is so poor. Quote
7shades Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Its a slippery slope IMO. (I know this particular device is just a fuel saver idea, so discount it cos I'm going on a rant) What starts as optional often ends up mandatory. The ETCS in the Chaser cannot be turned off (without nifty rewiring) and IT decides how much throttle you actually need. Dangerous when you are in the wrong lane of the highway, overtaking a B double, and your throttle reduces by 50%.... Likewise ABS, Stability control, Traction control... granted they are safety aids which function properly in most situations, but there are times when they do not, and it only takes that one time to put you in a box. For instance the ABS in my work vehicle has failed to apply enough brake on several occasions, once almost killed me. ESP in most new cars can't be turned off, and has been proven unreliable in certain situations. The problem as I see it is that computers will always operate only within their programmed parameters. The only perfect computer is a well trained human... Or maybe I'm just old and scared of new things. I like to drive my car myself... Quote
Damon550 Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 its like traction control the old man at the servo crashed into a barrier going round a round about car decided to go out side ways but he couldnt power out of it so wham new car was wreaked... Quote
strola Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Something tells me this wont be an option on the R35 GT-R. A fantastic idea in my opinion! http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic.../808040393/1148 This is not a new idea. Peter Wherrit came up with the idea back in 1983....personally I am with 7shades here, my VR SS has the ABS disabled (permanently unless my wife gets in the can she will turn it back on (which I don't mind as it could be useful for her as she is not as confident in it as me... my car I suppose :eatlead:) Some of this "so called aids" really do concern me. If I did not want to drive then I would be on a BUS (definitely not a taxi would prefer to take me chances crossing the hume blindfolded.. :bash: Cheers Quote
irokin Posted August 6, 2008 Author Report Posted August 6, 2008 We just need the CST option like the Ferrari's. "Commit Suicide... Training" as JC puts it. Personally I think if he managed to get it sideways with traction control on either his entry speed to the round about was excessive or the traction control wasn't aggressive enough. ABS yes, you can stop faster without it but the vast majority of road users have absolutely no knowledge of skid control. Personally I prefer driving without ABS but its not that big a deal to drive around it. Porsche Cup cars ran world wide with ABS for many years. Quote
Damon550 Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 (edited) it was to fast for the conditions IE: wet :eatlead: it was a falcooon, if that makes the situation worse... i know plenty of people that can get a car sideways with traction controll on rather nasty way to try and drift though Edited August 6, 2008 by Damon550 Quote
