Johno Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 There's a site on the net somewhere (can't remember exactly, and can't be bothered searching) that shows you how you can do a pretty good cheap-arse paint job using rust-paint and high-density foam rollers, for the fraction of the cost of a spray job. Here's that website, ROLL YOUR CAR http://rollyourcar.com/default.aspx Not my cuppa tea but i suppose it would be ok for a cheap paint job under $100 bucks. :y: Quote
crazyrob Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 mate i would do the primer bits which is easy and get someone that could do it for cheap but good job or get the tools and give it a go.. i havnt done it yet but ive got mates that will help me out doing it i just need to buy the spray gun but I'm getting another mate to get the rust out from my boot etc for a cashy job.. here is a pic of my car atm looks like poo but still sanding and priming robbie Quote

rundell Posted September 17, 2008 Author Report Posted September 17, 2008 Shit the paint jobs look decent on that website you wouldnt think they would do an alright job. Ive got spray gun and crap but no booth so i might try a panel with spray gun and one with roller see what goes alright. Quote
canna Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 Iam currently doing the daily project on this forum its my sons, nothing likeing have a go yourself get your info regards to prep and paint ,u will proberly stuff it up however i have seen some good first time attemts remember prep is everthing(guide coating)and if painting in acyrlic paint do it in summer do not use 2pac very dangerous regards daily project Quote
Doogs Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 I'm yet to see one! I 2nd this. Doing a spray job is not that difficult as others have said. It is all in the method and takes patience. Like anything car related problems pop up and things don't always go to plan, so don't try and rush it. If you have a mate who can lend a hand or at least someone to give you advice then that would be a bonus. Do a bit of reading around about technique etc, there is a fair bit of info out there on the net. Good Luck Quote
Gspec Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 Do it your self! Sure it may or may not turn out 100% BUT you can rub runs and nibs out AND most importantly, you'll get experience for your next spray job ;) Do a little research and do a few practice runs first. Don't be shy :) Quote
Corolla1 Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 I'm back with more pics. practice is important, as others have said. i had a practice on some scrap sheet metal. if you prime your car before you put the top coat on, this is a good time to practice. the setup of the gun is very important, this is where most people go wrong. (you will get runs or orange peel if you are not careful) heres more pics. it looks really rough after ya sand it Quote
Corolla1 Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 the last pic of the last reply was the first priming coat. (same colour made it hard) heres more sorry About crap photos, they were taken on a mobile phone Quote

rundell Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Posted September 18, 2008 Yeh ive decided to give it a go my self and just reasearch lots and maybe get some advice some people who have done it themelves when i get around to doin it. Just for now i have sanded down my bonnet and just about to prime it. i might just give that a gloss black job with spray cans now cos i can't be bothered because i will eventually sand the whole car. I was thinking green for a ke55? cheers for all the advice Quote
rundell Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Posted September 18, 2008 ohh and forgot to add with sanding do i just lightly sand it down till the paints faded or is it best to get down to the bare steel? or only down to bare steel for the rusted bits? Quote

Once you have gone to the effort of preping it all up you may as well get your hands on a spray gun and do it right. Spraying it yourself with a gun is the best part, it is what you go to all the effort for with the prep work. Quote
Felix Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 (edited) Here's that website, ROLL YOUR CAR http://rollyourcar.com/default.aspx Not my cuppa tea but i suppose it would be ok for a cheap paint job under $100 bucks. :) I had a look at that site and was amazed at some of the results they are getting, especially this Corvair... More here of the $50 paintjob, though I would imagine they would have used way more than that in sand paper. Edited September 18, 2008 by Felix Quote
